About William

I am passionate about teaching English and all related subjects -- reading, writing, literature, grammar. I have two graduate degress (a master's and a doctorate) and have taught at the college level for more than 20 years.

When I was in college, a friend of mine noted I had a special talent for teaching, but I did not enter the teaching profession at that time -- I went into business and did several other things. It wasn't until I was in the middle of my working life that I realized none of the things I was doing was really satisfying, and so I did a life assessment and decided to return to my first love -- teaching!

I have graduate degrees in English and Education and 20 years experience teaching at the college level. I have taught everything from rudimentary English and composition skills, to lower and uppper division literature and creative writing, to basic research and even doctoral research and dissertation writing. I have post graduate training in linguistics and religion, and for several years I have even taught mythology!

Because learning of this sort is highly individualized, I typically assess where the student is in terms of their development -- this can be done during conversation or through reading their material. And then I have a discuss with the student as to their goals -- what do they want to accomplish. It's at that point that we jointly work out a plan of learning.

I have worked with teenagers and young adults of all types of ability -- from English-language learners to students working towards their doctorates.

I would suggest that not only do you attempt to access the abilities or the knowledge of the teacher but that you 'try out' teacher to see if you two are a good fit. Even the best teacher with the best of intentions might not "fit" you.

I could probably think of many -- but the types of experiences that make me most proud are of two types: when I'm able to 'turn on' a student to learning in general or to the subject we're learning; or when I'm able to inspire a student who doesn't think of themselves as a "good student," or a "good learner" or a "good writer" to do better than they think they're capable of. Recently, I had a young woman in my senior thesis class -- she was discouraged; she'd already flunked the class once, mostly because she doubted herself so much that she had stopped trying. I was able towork with her and by breaking down the steps to manageable tasks, convince her and show her that she could succeed. I was happy to see that she had finished the thesis and earned a C in the class and will graduate this next term!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What specifically do I want to accomplish? For example, "write a college essay." Or, "become competent in English grammar." Or, "Learn how to write a college-admissions" essay." Or, "Understand and learn how to critique short stories (or poetry, etc)."

You might also think about what kind of instruction has helped you before. How do you learn best?
