About Mary

Master’s educator with 24 years-experience teaching diversified learning levels and age groups. Highly creative and able to turn complicated material and data into comprehensive and interactive lessons. But that is not all. Reading and writing is akin to life support. It can raise an individual out of the darkness and into the light on so, so many levels. Therefore, I don't just want my students to simply learn those skills to pass a test. That's all fine and good, but my hope is to help them develop a passion for the roads on which reading and writing can take anyone who dares to indulge.

Watching my students move beyond simply getting by to living up to their potential, to using their newfound skills to explore themselves and the world around them through books and various genres of writing.

When my daughter was 2, I went to work as a substitute, knowing very little about Florida's education system, let alone what all the acronyms. I took a two week appointment for a middle-school, SEH class. That particular acronym turned out to mean Severally Emotionally Handicapped. I survived and students were learning. During the second week, the Drop Out Prevention teacher walked out on the job and Principal asked me if I would be interested in teaching full time. And that is how I got my beginning as an educator.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing, I am published in small newspapers and magazines. I have been enjoying reading and writing since a young girl and hope to share my passion with others!

About the lesson

During my initial call I gather as much information on my student's academic needs as possible, as well as his or her interests. This allows me to prepare our first lesson with materials that are interesting and engaging. When we first meet, I will determine if there are any other issues that need to be addressed through a brief formative assessment. And together we begin our journey on the road to prolific reading and writing.

From level classes, to gifted classes, to SEH, to ELL, to ESE students.

Check the tutor's creditentials. Then discuss your needs on the phone prior to hire and be sure this is someone with whom you can be comfortable learning.

What is goal for tutoring and/or what do you want to accomplish from tutoring?
