About James

I hold New York State certifications to teach both English Language Arts and Literacy at the elementary and secondary levels. I am proficient in all areas of literacy instruction - phonological awareness, phonics, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension - and my writing expertise extends to grammar, mechanics, usage, and style. As a classroom teacher with experience in grades 4-12, I have worked with a variety of students, each with unique learning needs, so I am qualified and prepared for any teaching or tutoring opportunity in the areas listed above. I am conversant in the Common Core and Next Generation standards, as well as in more classical models, such as the Socratic and scholastic methods. I have also helped prepare students for the grade 3-8 ELA exam, AIMS Web literacy tests, Fountas and Pinnell benchmarks, English Regents exam, and the AP Literature test.

I will be brief. I love the English language, and I love when my students come to understand and appreciate its strangeness, utility, and beauty.

I have been a full-time English teacher for seven years at Shelter Island School (located comfortably between the forks of Long Island), and our school is a small one, so I have worked with a variety of grade levels (in fact, I have taught each grade between 4 and 12 at least once). I continue to take professional development courses, so my knowledge of pedagogical best practice is up-to-date. I am certified to teach Literacy from grades pre-K through 12, and English Language Arts from grades 5 through 12.

About the lesson

With new students, my goal is to learn about who they are as learners, what teaching methods that have worked for them in the past, and their general disposition to all things literacy. Then, I customize my instruction to meet their precise needs, without superfluous gimmicks or distractions. I have created hundreds of useful materials in all areas of English literacy and language arts that may benefit your child, but I love challenges, too, especially those that encourage me to be creative and design all-new materials for the individual student. We will work diligently together, but not rigidly; the student's needs and progress will be the creative force behind my instructional choices.
