About Stephen

As a teacher, I tried to always tailoring my lessons to what the students need.

I've been a teacher who worked with students of all age groups and skill levels for close to 15 years. I'm an expert in helping students understand literature and developing academic and creative writing. I have teaching credential in Secondary English from the State of California.

It started with helping students at the university writing center when I was earning my BA in English. I found that I had a talent for helping students with their academic work. I also really enjoyed the work. Mondays and Wednesdays, when I worked at the writing center, were my favorite days of the week. And from there, I realized gradually over time that teaching is my calling and my passion.

- BA in English (University of Illinois Chicago)

- MA in Single Subject Teaching (University of Southern California)

- State of California teaching credential (single subject English)

- TESOL certification (School for International Training)

When working with new students, I typically talk with them for about 10 to 15 minutes to get a general understanding of where they're coming from, what their anxieties are, and what they feel they need to work on.

Of course, it'd be impossible to totally understand new students after one 15-minute talk, but the goal of the talk is to get to know them in a relaxed atmosphere in order to develop a connection, and hopefully trust, as I have more sessions with them.

From there, I work with the students to set clear goals for themselves. Once we have clearly stated goals, we can plan out our sessions.

I've worked with many different types of students in almost all age groups from prekinder to age 70. I've worked with students from the U.S. as well as students from Korea, China, and Vietnam. The students I've worked with also were of varying skill levels from students who were just starting to learn English to native English speakers.

If you're looking to hire a teacher, not only in my area of expertise but in other fields, I would urge you to keep track of the types of questions he or she asks, if any. The mindful, delving questions will not only show the teacher's capability but also their interest in you as the student. It's always better to work with a teacher who genuinely cares about how you do then having a teacher with a long list of credentials who might not care.

I had a student named Jason in Korea whom I worked with since he was in the 7th grade. We met at least twice a month for two hours, sometimes more depending on what he needed. We mainly worked on understanding literature and developing academic essays as well as creative fiction. He was admitted to Dartmouth last year and when he told me what I meant to him over the years and thanked me for helping him reach one of his goals, I was moved beyond words.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask themselves, "WHY do I want help with this subject?" This is to get at the student's endgoal and level of motivation.
