About Betty

Hello! My name is Betty Kim, and I am an English major (with a concentration in Creative Writing) at Dartmouth College. I am currently a rising senior in my undergraduate studies, and I have been a part-time tutor since I was in high school. To me, teaching is the most important form of learning.

-English Major at Dartmouth College; on track to write an Honors Thesis in Creative Writing during my senior year. I am also trained in analytical writing, having taken several classes that deal with higher-level literary theory. In spring 2019, I was the winner of the Erskine Caldwell Creative Writing Prize for a short story I wrote. In fall 2018, I attended a study abroad program to study British literature at King’s College London.

-SAT Reading/Grammar/Essay Teacher's Assistant at Lee's Review (Summer of 2016; graded Reading, Writing, and Essay sections of SAT, held workshops and one-on-one office hours for students who wanted/needed extra help)

-I have been a college entrance essay tutor since graduating high school. I helped with writing UC essays, the Common Application essays, and various private school essays. I also helped with writing other blurbs students might need to submit to schools (Common Application, Resumes, and even Musical Resumes — I am a classically trained violinist/pianist and also know the details of how to create a good musical supplement for applicants). One student I helped with applications is now a sophomore at Princeton, and another is a junior at Boston University.

About the lesson

During my first session with a student, I like to get to know them as a reader and writer. After asking basic questions to gauge their level (such as classes they've taken at school, how they've done), I also like to ask questions about what kind of reading and writing they find fulfilling, and what their favorite texts are (this includes not just novels, but also articles, childhood favorites, comic books, and even movies and TV shows). Then, I would ask them what they want to improve on. This helps me get to know how I can engage with the student; it is very difficult to get someone to improve their test scores/GPA/whatever another academic goal might be if they are not engaged with the material. I like to focus not only on getting great results, but also making sure the student will grow as a reader and writer so they are on track to continue the journey for the rest of their life.
