About David

My method of tutoring is radically student centered. Writing is a very personal act, and often the best way to improve your essay and your writing overall is to reflect broadly on what it is you want to say and why.

I derived this method from the TRAC writing fellowship at Lehigh University, where I worked as a tutor and teacher for 3 years.

I will help you improve your grammar and structure, giving you actionable advice on the mechanics of writing, but I will also help with ‘higher order’ concerns like the clarity, voice, and impact of your written work.

My goal is not only to improve your grades, but also to help you find the joy of writing and feel proud of your work.

Big improvements in an essay often come not through a tedious slug through the various elements of the paper, but through ‘aha’ moments, when everything clicks, and the changes you need to make become obvious.

Helping students find these ‘aha’ moments and witnessing them, either during a session or seeing it in a new draft of their essay, is the thing I enjoy most about the work I do.

I have always loved writing, and have done so of my own volition since I was eight years old. When I got to college, I found that while I needed a lot of advice when it came to taking tests, I had a lot of advice to give when it came to writing essays, and it was a joy to give advice to friends when they asked.

My first experience teaching professionally was as a TRAC writing fellow. In that role I helped students one-on-one with their college writing assignments, and later on taught a 4-credit college course to new writing tutors. For more details on this, read the section on my education and experience.

When I was an undergrad at Lehigh University, I worked in the TRAC (Technology, Research, and Communication) writing tutor program for 3 1/2 years. As a part of this, I took a college course on college essay tutoring, and later I was the primary instructor for that same course.

For two years I worked with students writing essays for business, social science, humanities, and general english classes. The second of those two years, I was studying philosophy at the University of Oxford, and learned to tutor online so I could keep working with Lehigh students.

The third year, I became a ‘mentor fellow’ a teacher for newly hired TRAC tutors. I learned a lot more about teaching and tutoring that year than I had in the previous two combined.

During my last semester of college, I was the student manager of the TRAC program, working alongside the faculty director and other members of the leadership team to guide the whole program of 80+ tutors.

If you are interested in working with me, I’m happy to email, call, or video chat to answer any questions you may have.

Whenever a student and I decide to start working together, the first thing I need to know is what they are working on and what their goals are. If this is an assignment for a class, it helps me to know what the prompt is, how it is graded, what about the assignment scares, frustrates, excites, or inspires you, and so on. The more info I have, the more I can help you enjoy the process of writing and achieve the results you are pursuing.

We can meet to discuss your project at any level, whether you have a rough draft, an outline, or even just a prompt. I will meet you wherever you are in the writing process and help you all the way to a finished essay you can be proud of.

I have worked with students who had a wide range of projects, personalities, and skill levels.

An essay for a business class isn’t the same as an essay for a class on world religions.

Someone who has always excelled in english classes isn’t going to have the same needs as someone who is more partial to mathematical thinking.

Someone who grew up speaking english is going to have different questions than someone who speaks english as a secondary language.

You, your process, and your project are unique. My job is to meet you exactly where you are as a writer.

Whoever you work with, whatever their style, just remember that you are the authority on your project, your style, your voice. The tutor is not there to tell you what to say, what to think, or how to say it or think it. The job of the tutor is just to help you find your way of articulating exactly what it is you are trying to articulate.

My fee is 35$ per session.

For that fee, I will take a look at your current draft or outline ahead of the time of our meeting and give you written notes on ‘low order’ concerns, such as grammar, spelling, and the structure of the paper. Then we will meet over video chat for up to an hour, where we’ll talk about anything and everything about your paper, from the lower order concerns to the higher order ones, like clarity and voice. By the end of that session, together, we will come up with a plan for how you will move forward with your writing project.
