About Connie

If you're reading this, then you're probably a high school student or prospective transfer student thinking of applying to college and maybe even fretting over the process. All the research you need to put in, transcripts you need to order, forms to fill out, essays to write -- all that on top of school and/or work. I know what it's like to be in the thick of the college application process. I remember holing up in my bathroom frantically banging essays perched atop my favourite stool for hours at a time. But there *is* an end to it all, and you *will* get there -- I'm currently a student at Swarthmore College studying classics and philosophy. Before transferring to Swarthmore, I kicked off my undergraduate education at Deep Springs College, a small liberal arts school located in rural California. Why me? > I have experience for both first-year college applications AND transfer applications > I pay a lot of attention to detail (those little nitpicky grammatical points that fly under the radar) because oftentimes, clarity of meaning come out in perfecting those little details > I pay a lot of attention to the structure of sentences and how that affects the overall message and feeling of the essay > I will try to understand what you're trying to say, and help you make it so that your college application essay can convey that message stylistically, concisely, and clearly within the word limit > If you give me multiple essays, then I will tell you what sort of applicant you look like as a whole to the college you're applying to Ultimately, I'm trying to help you create a a coherent writing piece so that you can express yourself as best as possible to college administrators. By "coherent writing piece", I mean a college essay that is clear in meaning and logically coherent while maintaining your personal voice. I love reading, reading about other people, and getting to know other people. It is also amazing to experience the moment in which an internal idea or feeling becomes clearly conveyed externally in writing.

I went to Deep Springs College (a non-traditional small liberal arts college in rural California) for two years before transferring to Swarthmore College, where I am now.

I've done volunteer work teaching math to elementary school students, and I've helped friends and acquaintences with their college application essays.

About the lesson

If writing college applications, I want to know how YOU write and what YOUR voice is. I will have a conversation with you to see what you're trying to express in your essay, and then I'll work with you to convey that very message in the most clear and direct way while also keeping your personal voice.

I've worked with elementary school students, as well as high school students.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
For college essays: Why are you doing what you're doing? Why do you want to go to this college? What are you trying to say here? Why are you trying to say that?

For other writing help: What do I have trouble with? How much do I read outside of class? Why am I having trouble with this topic?
