About Gina

I am a paraprofessional at a middle school and primarily have experience working with students in 5th-7th grade. I also did 1:1 tutoring with college students when I was attending UMass Amherst. My strengths are essay drafting, editing, and educating others about general grammar, paragraph structure, flow in an essay and how to come up with a thesis statement. I have extensive experience working with students in a school setting, which prepares me to work with a whole range of students with different strengths and struggles. I love writing, so hopefully some of my passion will inspire the students I work with!

I'm passionate about educating others, while simulteneously learning from them as well! I really like the trial and error process of figuring out what works with a specific student, as I think one of the most important things to be aware of as a tutor is that there is not just one way to teach or reframe things. Playing around with methods of teaching and getting information across is something I love to do, as I'm a creative person and I like to challenge myself to find a path to success for each student I work with.

I graduated from UMass Amherst in 2019 with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Education. I have worked at a summer school for four summers, I spent my senior year at UMass working 1:1 with student athletes on their organization, writing, and reading comprehension skills. I now work at a middle school across grades 5-7 in all subjects.

About the lesson

I like to get to know students before starting anything academic. I think it's really important to know the person you're working with and build rapport before jumping into work! After an introduction, I'll likely go through the student's experiences in English classes, their likes/dislikes, and what aspects of writing and/or reading cause them stress, frustration etc. The goal is to get an overall understanding of who the student is and where to begin in their tutoring journey!

I've worked with students with a variety of intellectual and physical disabilites (ASD etc.). I currently work in the Emotional/Behavioral Difficulties program at a middle school. So, I have experience working with students with a variety of specific learning needs/environments and I am very flexible in accomodating different students depending on their IEPs (or individual preferences).

I generally charge $40/hour for one student. I will negotiate different pricing depending on individual circumstances, how much prep time it requires etc.
