About Shawn

I tutor across multiple disciplines and practices. Struggling students will see their grades improve and high performing students will take it to the next level. I hold two Bachelor of Science degrees in Agricultural Sciences and Sustainability (Oregon State University, 2016), a Graduate Certificate in Water Conflict Management (OSU, '18), as well as a Master of Natural Resources (OSU, '19).

85% of my lower division undergraduate work was paid for by tutoring in a Writing Center. I received several scholarships in undergraduate and graduate school that were based in the disciplines I tutor. I also originated two internships as an undergraduate student working alongside faculty, staff and Master's/PhD candidates on writing the university's Carbon Action Plan as well as their Green Office certification program. While working with the former I generated a large amount of technical writing, including sub- documents for the Finance Dept. and I am a named contributor on the published document. The Green Office certification program has resulted in 12 university departments or units as well as 5 community businesses receiving gold, silver, and bronze ratings to date, with another 6 in progress.

From elementary school to high school, I was a minimum of 4 grades ahead in English/Writing. I took the SAT in 7th grade and scored perfectly on the written/verbal section as part of the Duke Talent Search program, and scored 5s on both the AP English Literature and AP English Language exams. Undergraduate achievement included training as a Peer Mentor and later, a student teacher, focused on writing and the sciences. I had a large number of ESL students, as well as learning disabled and "troubled" students, and even taught Basic Writing and Freshman-level exposition at a prison in Washington. I thrive on working with underrepresented populations and marginalized groups, each of which bring their own challenges to the table without even mentioning their tutoring needs. Challenge Accepted!

About the lesson

I speak with them online, via phone, or in person to first assess our rapport. Then comes a number of different tactics depending on their level of need, skill, and what they're looking for in general. Some students need to work piece by piece, focused only on their pressing need. Others can benefit from a more global approach where I might give them a 5-minute writing assignment or even an overnight to see how they put thought to paper with unexpected assignments or deadlines.

No two students are alike so I can't speak to a typical process per se, but I do think and adapt to each student as situations and hopefully skills develop.
