About Kyle

Many lessons are taught from a studen-teacher dichotomy where there is a sort of one-size fits all scenario and the teacher imparts only the knowledge they see as important. In my experience, I find that true progress is made when the divide between teacher and student is made less distinct. I have a very unique musical background, involving a high degree of focus on improvised and Black American Music, as well as Indian classical music, and many styles of modern Indie/experimental music and the various lineages feeding into all of that. I believe that a person's unique musical voice and the consistency in practice to train that voice should be the forefront of the goals of studying with a mentor.

I enjoy the deep study of music and the various art forms that influence how we play. I enjoy getting to know people's stories and watching them grow into unique musical artists with ideas vastly different from my own. I enjoy watching people absolutely crush it in a specific area of expertise.

I've always loved teaching people new skills and ideas, not just musical ones either. Pretty early after making great headway on the guitar, I realized that many people around me had a desire to learn guitar as well, and so I started offereing neighborhood lessons. That provided me the ability to get a close look at all of the different styles people had for learning, and when I went to college and took classes in music education, that allowed me to focus all of these different styles in an effective teaching method.

I have 15 years of experience in the music industry, as well as a Bachelor's degree from Indiana University with an extra focus on classical guitar. I have had experience producing and writing songs and records in various genres, I have touring experience, and I have live sound experience. I have experience as a booking agent and administrative experience organizing masterclasses and large groups of people in educational settings. I have taught guitar, bass, and piano for the last 10 years of my life, and I regularly study and practice daily on all these and a few other instruments.

About the lesson

If you would like to meet, I would ask that you come prepared to play a piece of your choosing that can be performed solo-- whether it's an original you can play and sing, or an arrangement of a standard for solo guitar, or a Scott Joplin rag--anything that requires no accompaniment. I would also like to hear the major scale and it's triads and arpeggios in all 12 keys. Lastly, I would like you to show me three separate rudiments on a drum practice pad that incorporate your other limbs somehow. A good example of this would be anything from Alan Dawson's Rudimental Ritual. After that, I'd love to discuss musical goals and life goals, and get to know what other activities you are involved in. I might ask you to sightread some music, or to play something as a duo, and get to know your musical background.

I have worked with all types-- young beginners whose hands are not even big enough to wrap around the neck or stretch across more than 5 piano keys, to adults 50 years or older who have decided to start a new hobby. I have worked with many a highschooler who has gone on to major in music at a well-known music school, and I work with a child-prodigy whose career in music at the age of 6 is already vastly farther than my own.

Details

I prefer to charge per month of lessons, at a rate of $70/hr. That would amount to $280 per month of hour-long lessons, or $140 per month of half-hour-long lessons. If you prefer to "drop-in," or call for a lesson for a short term goal--recital practice, college audition, songwriting workshop, production on a song, etc. my rate is $80/hr. as it is far less secure for me in the long run to offer "pay-as-you-go" practice.
