About Dennis

Two of my greatest passions....playing guitar and teaching guitar! I've been playing for 40+ years and teaching for 15 years. I've played with a few bands in the metroplex, but instruction is really my calling.

Patient, knowledgeable, and versatile - I play and teach blues, rock, country - you name it! Acoustic or electric. I've taught students from 6 to 60+ and modify my lessons to meet the needs of my students. My lessons are a mix of mechanics, ear training, theory, and practice regimens. Look me up today...you won't be disappointed!

Probably what I enjoy most about giving lessons is running into students that have taken lessons from other instructors for a considerable length of time but feeling like they have learned very little - then being able to change that in a hurry! Just because an instructor may be the best guitarist (which I am not) or has the best website doesn't mean they are an effective instructor. I have trained and instructed folks in all walks of life and get a great feeling from helping them out.

The same goes for trying to learn on line. Granted, there are some great instructional websites out there, but the biggest problems with them are (IMHO):

1. You really need some playing background for them to be helpful.

2. Most sites really don't give you a roadmap of what to do to get started. They are a bunch or great (or not so great) players showing you some really neat stuff, but not helping you GET STARTED.

3. And, of course, no interaction with the student.

What gets me stoked is helping someone who is frustraed and seeing the "light go on" when when they start seeing the big picture and how each step in their learning process brings them a little closer to it! NUFF SAID!

I've always had a passion for training and instruction. The remarkable thing is - with every lesson, I learn something and become a better instructor!

I am self taught, but have wealth of experience and I am very versatile, playing all types of music. I have done a good deal of training, both n the field of guitar instruction and various other fields. I always look for thet "teachable moment: and love it when I see the "light go on"!

About the lesson

First, I evaluate the student's goals - what type of music do they want to learn and what is their "end game". Looking to perform or just wanting to play for yourself or loved ones?

Next, I look at previous musical training - if any. None? No problem...we all have to start somewhere.

Next, let's evaluate your gear. Do you have the right gear for wha you want to play? Do you HAVE any gear? Either way, I can help.

Then we look at exactly how much theory a student wants to learn. Everyone learns differently...some have to know all the "nuts and bolts"; some just want to pick up their guitar and play! Either way, you will learn some theory - either formally or just by playing!

Finally, it's off to the races. If learning songs is your passion, I'll get you there as soon as possible!!

I've worked with all ages of students and, although I coached different skill levels, most of my students tend to be beginners of students who have worked with other instructors who haven't quite "hit the mark".

Look for an instructor with PASSION, EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE of the instrument and music in general.

Perfect! Dennis is a great teacher. I have played guitar for years but have lacked some fundamental concepts that have kept me from progressing in my development. After a short time with Dennis I can find chord shapes all over the fretboard, figure out progressions to songs without looking them up, and I am starting to get comfortable mixing major and minor scales while soloing.
