About Brian
Concerned about the impact of COVID 19 and remote learning on your education? As a teacher, I understand that the transition to remote learning was hard on everyone (including you, parents!), and I can make sure that you are caught up and ready for the next school year! Whether you want to make sure you are prepared for your first year of high school, the SATs and college applications, or your first year of college, I will help make sure you are successful! My name is Brian. I teach Social Studies in Colorado and in my spare time I play guitar, play basketball, ski, raft, camp and hike. I have 9 years of experience teaching a variety of ages and abilities. I teach by getting to know the strengths, interests, and areas for improvement of my students. This way I can make lessons and activities that engage students and focus on using their strengths to improve their areas of growth. I have a strong understanding of state tests based on Common Core reading and writing standards and Colorado Social Studies standards. I can also work with you to improve study skills and organization. If you want help with college applications, reading, writing essays, creative writing, social studies, history, or civics, let me help! I look forward to working with you. Have any questions? Email me at (concealed information) so we can figure out if I am the tutor that meets your needs.
I enjoy teaching and tutoring because I enjoy interacting with students. I love helping people come to new understandings and new realizations. I enjoy working with different types of people and hearing their thoughts and ideas about subjects. Most of all, I beleive that everyone should take their improvement and education seriously. Whether you struggle in a certain subject, with a certain type of teacher or class structure, or are curious to know more, you should have access to the tutoring you need to excel!
I got started teaching because I love the energy of students. Young people, and any people wanting to learn something new have an unmatched energy. Being a part of the process of learning and seeing people come to a new understanding is such a great feeling. From the first day as a teacher's assistant to now, I have loved teaching, and I want to share that joy of learning with you!
I have a BA in History from Colorado College and a MA in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Denver.
I have a professional teachers license with a credential in Secondary Social Studies (grade 6-12) and 9 years of experience teaching.

My first day as your tutor will be spent getting to know you. I want to know your interests, areas of strength, and areas for improvement. I want to know what you would like to gain from tutoring why you picked me specifically to be the tutor. I want to hear these answers from the student and any important adults involved as well. Then, I want you to know who I am. Teaching is a relationship and I know from experience that the more we understand each other, the more productive our time together will be. We will then set out a basic plan for everything we will cover and I will use that plan to create individual lessons and activities.
I know I will be able to help the following types of students:
Anyone concerned about standards, skills, and content they might not have learned during remote learning in the last months of the 2019-2020 school year.
Students looking to improve reading and writing.
Students looking to improve Social Studies, including history, government/civics, geography, and economics.
Students who are learning English as a second language.
Students with IEPs looking to catch up in general education classes.
Students looking to make their college application stand out above the rest.
I have worked with all types of students. I have worked with elementary schoolers, middle schoolers, and high schoolers. I have taught students learning English as a second language. I have taught students with learning disabilities on IEPs and I have taught students designated as gifted and talented. I have taught at public schools, charter schools, and elite private schools. Whether you need to catch up or are looking to separate yourself in order to get into an elite college, chances are I have the experience needed to get you where you want to be.
When you are looking for a teacher, make sure that teacher is a good fit for YOU! The advantage of one on one tutoring, is the teacher will get to make lessons and activities designed specifically for you. Make sure they have skills and experience that will allow them to understand and teach what you need to learn. Also, make sure you will get along with them. A teacher should not become a best friend, but shared interests and compatible personalities will help create a positive experience that leads to learning.
I am very fond of the first time I got to go rafting after quarantine. I have been trying to socially distance to make sure that I and the people around me did not get sick, and as restrictions ended, I finally got out on the water. I enjoy spending time in the mountains, and the warm sun and cool water were refreshing after having to stay inside. Being able to spend time with my friends, laugh, and get a bit of excitement were just what I needed.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
When you are looking to hire a teacher, the discussion on needs should include everyone involved. You should decide with everyone involved (students and parents/guardians) what the areas for improvement are, and which of these areas will have the greatest impact on success. Also think about strengths. If you learn best in a certain way, or you already understand certain concepts, those stengths should be used to your advantage when it comes to learning new material.
