When I have a new student I always start with listening, observing, and building rapport. I usually try a few teaching techniques and styles and match my plans and style to what works best for each student and family.

Many of my students are special needs. I am trained and experienced with children who have many diagnosis including ADHD, Autism, and Sensory Processing Disorder and I recognize the challenges they face when trying to stay focused. In my experience modifications and strategies can make a huge difference and I am eager to help my students in these ways whenever possible.

My Story:

I began my career working for the School Board in a small town in South Louisiana. From the beginning, it was inherent to me to approach my sessions with broad expectations. I loved being creative and finding humor in the unexpected. I found that as I stepped into the professional world I was unable to leave behind my quirky spirit!  I accepted that my approach and style was not quite like most my colleagues. What was inherent to me was not something that I had explored before my career, nor was it anything that was modeled to me along the way. I found that this creativity was leading my client’s to opportunity and opportunity was leading me to questions. Why were some children learning better when we performed our session outside on the swing?

I had no idea that every time I dug deeper to find answers for my clients that I would find another question and another. I asked questions like, “Do delayed pointing skills have anything to do with delayed speech and language skills?” As I asked these questions and incorporated these basic foundational skills into my treatment, I began to feel like I was cheating! My clients were more successful and more engaged!  So, how does one delayed milestone impact another? These questions have grown into a fascination with learning to recognize the milestone disturbances that influence our speech and language development.

After two years of working for the School Board near my hometown in South Louisiana, I had just the right amount of confidence and doubt to want to warrant a life change. At the end of the school year, I accepted a job 500 miles north at a small outpatient pediatric clinic in Northwest Arkansas. The very first day at my new job I learned that I had three babies under the age of one year old on my caseload. I was twenty five years old and I knew NOTHING about babies, including how to gracefully hold one in my arms. It was in those three treatment sessions that I realized that I had, in fact, prepared myself. I had spent the last two years of my career understanding the foundation that all of my client’s need to be strong communicators. So this is where I began, and to this day, this is where I still begin with every child I treat.

I think back to the day I walked across the stage to accept my degree in 2009. I did not know that creativity would carry me to the questions that it has, but I now know that it is the gift of curiosity that leads me to be empowered by knowledge. I strive to maintain curiosity and to evoke empowerment with every client and every family I encounter. I don’t know where my creativity and curiosity will lead me in my career, but with it, I know that it will continue to be a fascinating journey!
