About Maya
I have been surrounded by education my entire life, with my mom being a Special Education teacher. I have always loved math and I was a teacher's assistant in high school for several different teachers. I am a firm believer in adapting teaching skills to the style of learning for each student, because everyone learns in a different way. It is primarily important to recognize abilities and to help improve on abilities that students may think need the extra support. When a student finally understands a concept they've long been struggling with, it gives me a sense of pride that I've helped a student reach and recognized their potential.
I have an AA and a BA, so I've completed a college degree. Since 9th grade, I have been volunteering at a camp for students with special needs, and the only two years I did not participate was when I was out of state for college finishing my Bachelors degree. After graduation, I was hired as a paraeducator for ABC Unified School District, where I remained for 15 months. I was later hired by Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District as an after school/ASES program tutor.

I like to start with 5-10 minutes of introductions. I'll talk for a few minutes about myself and then open the floor to my new student. I ask about likes/dislikes, hobbies, favorite/least favorite school subjects (and the reasoning behind it), etc. After initial ice breakers, I like diving right into what the student thinks they need the most help with and I'll start work right away.
