About Erin

Hi everyone! My name is Erin and I am a double major (physics and math/computer science), and double minor (statistics and astronomy) at Western Washington University, graduating in Spring 2022. I am an undergraduate researcher in astroinformatics, a recipient of the 2019 Google Lime Scholarship and the 2021 NCWIT Aspirations in Computing award, and a frequently invited speaker on being a disabled student in STEM. I have been tutoring for six years in math (up through calculus), physics, astronomy, computer science (Java, C, Python, R, HTML/CSS, SQL, and XML), and general chemistry.

I like to call myself the "formerly bad student" because, well, I was. While I have always loved STEM topics, I haven't always been good at being a student. After spending nearly ten years in the tech industry, I decided to come back and earn my degree. Coming back into school with a different outlook, and knowing more about myself as a person, allowed me to be a much better student. To sum it up, I went from a C- student to an A student and know what it's like to be struggling in a subject. My goal is to not only help my clients academically but also make them feel that STEM is for them, too.

My greatest joy in tutoring is helping people find their "A- hah!" moments. Many times, students struggling with STEM topics are only missing a few key ingredients. STEM is full of patterns and step-by-step processes, and missing one or two ingredients will obviously make it difficult. However, once we figure out those missing ingredients, we will work on them, and finally, there it is, the a-hah!

I started teaching informally through Girl Scouts of Western Washington ten years ago, leading my troop through many of the STEM badges. After completing my first year of programming classes at my community college back in 2016, my professor recommended me for a tutoring position with the school. I ended up thoroughly enjoying the opportunity!

Outside of my own STEM education, I have also taken a handful of K-12 education philosophy classes to satisfy my associate's degree. I have also participated in a STEM education research project during my first year at WWU, where we studied several papers on how students learn best in STEM topics. (Which, unfortunately, isn't the most common way students are taught STEM topics!) While I am not a certified teacher, creating a safe space for students to learn and approach learning is incredibly important, and I frequently research ways to improve my services.

About the lesson

I first want to get a sense of where the student is currently, both emotionally and conceptually. Is their major block because of confidence? Do they not like their teacher? Are they missing a small but important detail? The next step is to see what type of tutor they want me to be. Do they want me to lead them? Let them explore based on probing questions? What if I provided generic steps that they applied to their problems? Every student learns differently and has different needs. A one-size-fits-all methodology doesn't work in school, and it certainly won't work in tutoring!

I have worked with middle school through college-aged students, and many of those college-aged students were older than I was. Everyone has their own educational timeline, and I like to meet people where they're at and let them lead the way.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
As a disabled student, I have to be very careful with my teachers to ensure we're on the same page. Before each new quarter, I check in with myself and evaluate the previous quarter, both good and bad. What do I need to make sure the good stays good? What do I need to make sure that the bed doesn't happen again? Lastly, what do I need from my professor to accommodate my learning needs? It could be as simple as "I need direct communication and a rubric" or as complicated as "I would like to talk with you one on one about these questions." At the end of the day, your teachers are there to help you learn. Almost all of them will be open to having a conversation with you, whether you have a disability or not. (Plus, talking to your teachers more often develops a positive relationship that will make them excellent letter of recommendation writers!)

All tutoring sessions are virtual through Zoom. I recommend no more than two hours at a time, as it is not conducive to long-term retention of information.

College (including running start): $35/hr
