About Daniel

Hi! I'm Dan, MD, a retired, board-certified physician. Throughout my career, I realized the courses I appreciated the most weren't necessarily those that I was most interested in. Rather it was the professors who made the classes enjoyable. These professors both motivated and entertained.

Therefore, I have modeled my tutoring approach after these instructors: I make learning riveting and fun. My introduction to each topic usually amuses and captivates.

Through my questions, I help the pupil solve problems. Though exceptions can be made for student differences, I favor this Socratic method--teaching by asking questions--for this method maintains interest and leads to understanding. By encouraging, I build confidence. For over the past year with this technique, I have helped children struggling to learn prealgebra, Math 1 (which includes algebra 1) and Math 2 (which includes algebra 2).

I want to benefit the students I work with the most, so I welcome any suggestions pupils or parents offer. Feel free to contact me with questions or to schedule a lesson!

I have been tutoring in various capacities for 4 years, as a private tutor and a teacher's aide at the middle and high schools.

After I retired as a physician, I have always been attracted to teaching because I am a patient person, a good listener and teacher.

I therefore started tutoring, because I could continue to help others.

I was a straight A student in math through high school and have experience with both private tutoring, both in person and online.

I also volunteered as teacher's aide for middle and high school math.

I will first get to know the student and find out about their interests.  Then, I use this information to customize a tutoring program for them.

For instance, one of my students liked basketball and I developed math problems focused on basketball!  The student then excelled in math.

My teaching method uses asking questions to get the student interested and to test the student's knowledge.

A wide variety of students from those with poor math skills to excellent.  I have taught students of different ethnic backgrounds, different races.

Your teacher should be flexible and willing to adapt the teaching to the student to perk the student's interest.

Your teacher should be fun and excellent.

I taught a student whose main interest was basketball.  I customized my teaching program for him devising math problems that dealt with basketball.  He developed a keen interest in math as a result and improved.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1.  What are your qualifications?

I am a retired physician, a straight-A math student through high school with much tutoring experience.

2.  Tell me about a time when your student didn't get your explanation.  What did you do?

I can simplify the problem, sometimes using simpler numbers to explain the concept.  I also will try explaining in a different way

3.  Tell me about a time when you changed your teaching style to adapt to a student.

I developed math problems related to basketball for a student who was interested more in basketball.  This student then developed a math interest and excelled.
