About Kristy

First and foremost, I want my students to understand the material thoroughly. That requires a personal relationship with the student and an understanding of what works best for them. I have worked as a tutor for years, both in a corporate and private setting. This coupled with my degree in Math/English give me experience in a wide array of settings and subjects, allowing me to tailor my lesson plan to the student.

When the student shows progress or understanding. Nothing better than that "aha" moment. It's also rewarding to see a student's genuine excitement in regards to improvement in their learning.

I always could grasp concepts (especially those math related) in school pretty easily, and I realized that wasn't the case for everyone. By high school, I began helping my peers with our mutual homework and realized that I liked teaching. It felt good to be able to explain things in a way that helped my peers understand a concept they had not previously been able to comprehend. I have been tutoring ever since.

I have a BS in Mathematics and a BA in English which give me a good knowledge foundation. On top of that, I have been tutoring since high school (6+ years) and have spent about a year now tutoring at the corporate level.

About the lesson

Figure out what they are struggling with in school and see how far back we need to go to then start building towards grade level curriculum. Essentially pinpointing where to start and what the end goal is. It's also important to see if we mesh well personality wise.

I have worked with students from ages 8-23, from family members to strangers. Many of the students I have worked with have learning disabilities or other cognitive disorders that make school challenging.

Make sure that your learning style coincides with their teaching style. A teacher could have a PHD in math, but if they can't explain it to you in a way that makes sense, they probably aren't a good fit.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How often are you confused in class?

Do you find the work difficult?

Do you know what type of learner you are? Visual, auditory, etc.

Do you have trouble focusing on the work/studying?

Do you have a good foundation for the subject matter?

Do you struggle with the pace of the work?

Can you do the work without a calculator?

Do you know the rules that govern the subject: writing, reading, math, etc.?

For lessons that require me to come to you, I charge $25 an hour. If you are willing to meet at a safe office space I use for tutoring sessions, my rate is $20 an hour.
