About Emily

I'm new to this website, but I've been tutoring for over ten years! I am currently a graduate student in psychology and I've tutored students of all ages, from kindergarten to remedial math students in community college. I started tutoring in high school through volunteer work with the local middle school and fell in love with molding my approach of a concept to best fits each students' needs. I continue to love working with students in elementary and middle school, who are willing to learn and just need someone patient to create a space for them to do their best.

I've always been interested in helping people! From an early age I found that I wanted to teach other kids my age when I understood something they did not. That mentality has continued throughout my life. Now, I love bringing forward patients and understanding when new material can be challenging to understand.

I have been tutoring and working with students for several years now. I spent two years attending the College of DuPage, where I spent a semester tutoring Pre-Caclulus and remedial students. I graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor's degree in Political Science and a bachelor's in clinical psychology. I'm currently a graduate student at Rosalind Franklin University in the Clinical Counseling program on the research track.

About the lesson

New students should bring materials that they would like to work on from school. We can use homework or problems discussed in class that were challenging as a starting point. I'm a big fan of positive reinforcement, so bring a candy or treat to celebrate!

I've worked with people of all ages! But I think my favorites are elementary school, middle school, and adult students returning to school! I think something that these students have in common is their goal to learn new things and determination!

As someone who has taken advantage of a math tutor in the past, I think it's important for students to be firm in their knowledge of themselves. While I'm here to try my best to help you, and I will do everything in my power to alter my way of explaining to suit your learning style, if I'm not serving you best, you should feel free and empowered to look for someone who can help you best.

While not related to math or tutoring, I love to bring my 1 year old lab to the dog park to do the agility course. She's a bit timid around new things, but treats and rewards can be so helpful!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The student/teacher relationship is a collaborative effort! Teachers want to support you, but you have to be willing to put in the work as well. Approaching teachers with a thoughtful explanation of your needs goes a long way!
