About Gregory

My name is Gregory, but I always go by my middle name, Jason!

I am graduating this May (2023) from Skidmore College with a BA in Economics, with minors in Mathematics and International Affairs. I have maintained a GPA of 3.73 at Skidmore, and have been on the Dean's List throughout every semester. In addition to my degree work, I am a New York State-certified EMT-B, and I volunteer regularly both at school and in the community!

My mathematics coursework has reached its peak in Abstract Algebra, having studied Number Theory, Group Theory, Rings, Fields, Homomorphisms, and more. I am well-versed in mathematical proof, derivations, integrations, and linear algebra, and am experienced in LaTeX, a programming language for mathematics. I also have extensive experience in academic writing, research, literature review, and statistical analysis. I have taken a wide range of courses from environmental science, writing, religion, political science, and law.

Having been a student during the "COVID era," I am very comfortable with online learning platforms and am able to implement them in the most efficient ways possible for the learning process. I'm starting the next phase in my life and would be happy to help you or your student through the tough rigors of school!

I have not taught officially. My only experience has been helping classmates with course material.

I am well-taught in a wide variety of disciplines, but I shine the most in mathematics. I have taken several courses in Calculus, and my work in economics is also quite calculus-heavy. Within calculus, I have mastered derivations and integrations with and without limits, at the undergraduate level. I have taken extensive coursework in algebra, through subjects in linear and abstract algebra. I frequently work with matrices, sets, groups, and other algebraic concepts.

I am also quite experienced with college-level writing, having written several research papers over the last four years. I have extensive experience in statistical analysis and the research process.

In addition, I am a nationally registered and New York State-certified Emergency Medical Technician Basic. I am able to help a current EMT student learn their class material, and can also help with test prep for the NREMT-B exam.

About the lesson

The way I learn best is to break complex concepts down to their most basic forms of explanation and build my way up to understanding the higher levels of complexity within. A common problem I find, in mathematics especially, is to define new terms and explain new concepts in ways that other highly trained mathematicians would understand quite fluently, however, new students might struggle. I would start with a method of explanation that uses terms and concepts already mastered by the student, and build up, using their familiarity to help them develop new skills.

It is always helpful if a new student is able to supply the material which they need help with-- homework or textbook material, however, I am fully capable of producing material the student can use for review or practice. Similarly, it is great if a student is able to provide me with a formal outline of the material they need help with, however, if they are unable to, I can work with them to better define the areas of their curriculum in which they need assistance.

Being a current student myself, I believe I can approach them with a level of reliability that more experienced professionals may be detached from. I find a problem among teachers is a lack of perspective with a student who is new to the material the teacher is teaching. Many seem to instruct from a perspective of assumed knowledge, and I prefer a method of breaking concepts down into digestible forms so that they can be fully grasped by the student.

I have worked with peers, helping them with homework assignments, and to prepare for exams. I have also worked with elementary school-age kids during a babysitting job I had on various homework assignments.

The students should pinpoint specific problems that they have with the area of study. They might consider making a list of specific things that confuse them, or where they get stuck. This will help the teacher to directly address the problem at hand instead of having to search for what things confuse the student. Perhaps when faced with a problem they cannot solve a student can set that problem aside for the tutor so they can find similar problems to work through with the student.

Details

Pricing depends on the subject at hand. A higher-level curriculum will be more costly, as it will require more preparation prior to any one-on-one sessions, however, I am flexible with pricing. Pricing also depends upon any work that I may need to do beforehand. For example, if I need to develop a set of worksheets, or grade prior works, this may result in a higher fee to compensate for the work done outside of the session.
