About Andrea

Building confidence, by building skills is the name of the game at Harmony Tutoring. Our students see improved grades, test scores, and harmony in the household. We explain difficult concepts in unique ways, and students can see their improvement over time. We make learning fun by celebrating successes and encouraging perseverance. As a result, we have had success with resistant learners, shy and talkative personalities, and overachievers who strategize on how to find the answer without understanding the concept. We adjust to match the needs of our students. One size does not fit all when it comes to learning. We recognize that adult learners have different struggles and we work to help them overcome those struggles. We enjoy a good challenge and never give up on helping you achieve your goals!

I got started teaching when I was a teenager working for Taco Bell. The company was opening a new store and looking for a way to train a large number of employees quickly. I designed a training program for them and implemented it. It was a lot of fun and was very successful. I began to pursue a career in education after realizing how much I enjoyed this work.

I have a BA in History, an MS in Education; Instructional Design and Technology; and a certification in Montessori Education. I owned a Montessori 3-K school for 6 years and taught at a Montessori elementary school in the middle of the Kettle Moraine forest. Finally, I am certified through the Wisconsin Technical College System and have experience teaching adults including GED and SAT prep.

When I first meet a new student, I try to put them at ease by engaging them in conversation to help better understand their needs and goals. Over time, I begin to get a complete picture of how they learn best, and the types of activities they enjoy. I leverage this information to get the most out of our time together making adjustments as needed.

I have worked with a diverse group of students of all ages and walks of life. I have had a lot of success with students who struggle with ADHD and Anxiety issues specifically.

I would say that it is important to find someone who is able to adjust to the circumstances at hand. If you are hiring a tutor, chances are you understand the value of education. If you have a tutor that does not help you or your loved one be successful, then you are wasting your time and money.

One of my students has been very resistant to doing work outside of our sessions, especially with writing. Recently, we started working on Creative Writing and I expected she would only work with me, but to my surprise, she started writing outside of class! Now she is always eager to go over her writing and to get a new assignment.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would say students should ask specific questions and not be afraid of sounding dumb. Teachers do not think you are dumb for not knowing something. They see it as an opportunity to help you get over the hump!
