About Joseph
Tutoring is my most desirable pass time. Video games are a pleasant distraction but helping my peers and tutees understand mathematics is much more fulfilling and enjoyable. I would rather help you figure out a math problem than waste my time procrastinating my own class work and research.
I have a Bachelor of Science degree from West Virginia University, with minors in Statistics, Computer Science, and Physics. I want to teach mathematics but I extended my undergraduate career by a year so I could get three minors in these math heavy areas. If I didn't have such an incredibly rewarding experience with math I would probably be a physicist or computer scientist. Statistics is quite useful but it's just not that fun for me.
I am currently in graduate school at WVU pursuing a M.S. degree in Pure Mathematics. I have passed my Modern Algebra Exam and am preparing for my 2nd and final Master's exam in Topology.
My tutoring experience began at Greenbrier East High School where I accumulated over 100 hours of volunteer tutoring at my high school's after school tutoring program. During my undergraduate years at WVU I worked for the Honors/testWELL Learning Center during which I was certified by the National Tutoring Association (NTA) and during my senior year I was responsible for some of the training of my fellow peer mentors.
As a Graduate Teaching Assistant for WVU I have taught sections of Calculus 1 and College Algebra and substituted for faculty led sections in Calculus 2, 3, and differential equations. My course work in graduate school has strongly emphasized pure mathematics and I have taken two semesters of Topology, Analysis, and (Modern) Algebra. My elective courses have been in Combinatorics and Number Theory.
Every math students is a puzzle, trying to solve a puzzle of their own. When a students asks me a question and I have the opportunity to help them, three things are happening all at once. (1) The student is learning how to solve their problem, (2) I am revisiting a math problem and get to enjoy solving it all over again, and (3) I have to figure out how to help the student understand the problem as well as I do, or as close to that as possible!
I was an athlete before high school but I broke a vertebra in my lower back. After my first year of high school, my science teacher encouraged me to try tutoring after school. Tutoring replaced my old idea sports centered idea of a social life and I became a nerd! My ability to help people learn mathematics which is often one of a students most troubled and frustrating subject areas helped me form friendships that have lasted beyond high school and all through college.
100+ hours volunteer tutoring in high school
3 years experience tutoring undergraduate mathematics of all levels (algebra,trig,calculus 1,2,3, differential equations, discrete math, analysis, combinatorics, modern algebra, topology)
Taught a Calculus 1 section in Fall 2019, led two Calculus 1 recitation sections Fall 2018/Soring 2019, and taught College Algebra Spring 2020.

First, accept that I will not solve your problem for you! My initial approach will be to take any specific questions you give me and change the numbers! This will mean you will leave with at least 2 problems and 1 solution. You will learn how to solve your problem, not just the answer. If you just want the answer your talking to the wrong tutor.
High school students, middle school students, all levels of undergraduate students, a few graduate students.
In general, if you want a teacher, stay away from someone who talks AT you, through a problems solution until they get to the end, and then has the ignorance to ask "Does that make sense?". From a person like that you might walk away with an answer but your understanding of the problem and the context around the problem will be little better than when you started.
In math, find someone who has helped someone else before. Passing a class and teaching or tutoring a class require completely different levels of understanding.
I married my wife on January 1st 2020! I cried when she walked down the aisle. She she got to the end, she was standing there in her dress, and I let out this noise because I could barely breath. Nobody claims to have heard it but I swear I yelped, trying to breath, stop crying, and smile all at once was nearly impossible. I'll never forget how beautiful she looked.

Details
To be determined, depends on your goals and objectives. The level of material is relatively not important to me. I care about the gap between what you know and what you want to know. If you know how to write an equation but don't know why it works you're going to have to pay less than a person who needs to know how to use an equation but has never seen it before.
