About Alesi

My name is Alesi and I am a current sophomore at Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College. I am pursuing a double major in Urban Studies and Childhood Education with the hopes to become an elementary educator. I was previously a math tutor with City Year Americorps. I have completed two semesters of elementary math courses at Hunter College and received an A in both semesters.

I began during my gap year with City Year Americorps. I worked alongside two phenomenal fourth grade teachers five-days a week for an entire school year. During my days, I would hold mini-group sessions (5 students) where we would work on math fundamentals and focus on areas touched upon in class.

I am currently a sophomore at Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College. I am studying Urban Studies and Childhood Education to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher. I have completed the two required semesters of "Math for Elementary Teachers" and received an A both times. I was previously a math tutor with City Year Americorps where I worked inside a 4th-grade classroom and held mini-group lessons on my own.

About the lesson

All sessions will be held via Zoom given COVID-19 restrictions. The first session will include an additional 30 minutes free to allow time for myself, the student, and the parent/guardian to get to know each other and have a better understanding of what the student needs.

I've worked predominately with fourth graders, but I do have experience with 3rd and 5th-grade students. Additionally, the math curriculum I have learned covers 1st through 5th grade.

Identify the areas you are already strong with and share that with your tutor. It is important to know your strengths and weaknesses prior to jumping into a tutoring session. This is crucial as the tutor can focus on your needs rather than spending too much time on a topic you already understand.

Recently I adopted another kitten! He is a special needs cat who is fluffy and full of love.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think back to the steps covered in class. A majority of the time, math has many ways to complete a certain task (ie different ways to solve a multiplication problem). Students should try multiple ways and attempt to problem-solve prior to asking the teacher for help. If they are truly stuck, they should definitely seek guidance.
