About Enzan

What differentiates me from other tutors is my background in human psychology (2nd bachelors) that I have amassed from my coursework and my profession. I understand what motivates students towards success, what experiences have led them towards disinterest, and what emotions they experience when they feel they are not making progress. With this combination of factors, I have witnessed countless success stories with my students that had entered my classroom with a powerful disdain towards mathematics.

This may be me preaching the same thing over and over, but I enjoy cultivating a growth mindset within students that believe their abilities are fixed. I firmly believe that there is an ideal version of all of us that the world would greatly benefit from if we were to become who we could be. Mathematics is the code that writes the universe, and an understanding of it can create many opportunities that include, but is not limited to academic success.

1. I originally was an electrical engineering major at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Life happened and caused me to move to Orlando, and led to my enrollment at the University of Central Florida.

2. As I progressed into my degree, I found that I enjoyed the cursework that consisted of problem-solving, but not the applications of linear circuits and power systems. As a result of this discovery, I changed my major to pure mathematics and took many high level math courses, but found myself running into similar issues despite finding problems to solve. After a discussion with my college advisor, the only option left to not waste my math credits was math education.

3. This bummed me out as I thought I was giving up, but boy was I wrong! As I completed internships and service learning, I learned the missing component that I desperatley searched for was the development of others in the mathematical domain. I love to be around people, not necessarily systems, so I never looked back!

I have spent countless hours tutoring my peers in my undergraduate studies.

1. I have received a bachelors of science degree in mathematics education from the University of Central Florida.

2. I am closing in on three years of experience as a math teacher at an project-based, XQ-recognized Super School.

About the lesson

1. The typical process consists of having new students answer a collection of questions that illuminate their experiences in prior math classes that consist of subliminal and overt messaging. Many students are told by their teachers that math is not a skill that can be learned, but an innate talent. This leads into the development of a fixed mindset that can keep students from ever pursuing careers in STEM fields , and an overall decline of self-esteem and self-efficacy.

Upon gathering this information, I would have them complete a diagnostic quiz to show their level of procedural and conceptual knowledge of mathematical topics and concepts going back to things like positive-negative interactions, fractions, absolute-value functions, quadratics, exponential, trigonometric, and anything else I feel may be appropriate.

3. After gauging thier mindset & their skillset, I create an individualized plan and schedule to tackle students' areas of challenge and double down on their areas of competence.

1. I have worked with students from many backgrounds regarding racial identity, gender identity, ethnic identity, mathematical ability, and socioeconomic class. This diverse set of experiences has given me a grounded view of how many factors come into play and the ways these identities seep into messaging around mathematical potential.

Priortize teachers that possess a growth mindset with regards to math ability. Additionally, look to hire teachers that understand the conceptual component to mathematics, not just the procedural. Many math teachers can solve problems, but not go into the heart of mathematics, which is the 'why'. Truly understanding the topics allows for a better teaching ability and experience.

During my second year of teaching, there was a student who told me that prior to my class, she had hated math because of "the fact that there is only one answer", and that she had planned to cheat on every assignment. She then continued to thank me for being the best math teacher she ever had and taking the time to explain concepts in ways that did not tell her the answer, but allowed her to "see the answer." I tear up a bit as I type this if I am being honest.
