About Nidia

I am a reliable, patient, organized and experienced mathematics teacher that enjoys one on one tutoring as well as teaching in the classroom. In my 17 years of experience I have learned that effective teaching practices must actively involve students in their own learning. Lessons should be design to allow students collaborate in study teams to develop concepts through problem solving. Purposeful dialog and reciprocal teaching in small groups allow students make sense of and retain concepts for longer periods of time. Rather than direct teaching for most of the class period, when necessary, the teacher can pull the class together and address a challenging concept, correct a misconception, or provide additional information with a brief discussion. The teacher’s main role should be guiding, supporting, and nurturing a safe and positive classroom environment.

I love math and the best reward when teaching it are the "uh huh" faces of my students when they finally make sense of a concept or learn a certain skill.

I started teaching math when I got to California, just for the convenience of the schedule that would allow me to spend more time with my daughter, who was a toddler at the time. However, after spending sometime in the classroom, I discovered teaching was my passion, so I decided to switch gears and go back to school to get my math credential and later on my Master's Degree in Education.

I lived in Orange County, California, for the last 19 years and recently moved to Paramus, NJ. In California I taught high school math (algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2) for 17 years. I have a current California Single Subject Credential in Mathematics. I also have a Master's Degree in Education from National University in San Diego, California, and a Bachelor's Degree in Systems Engineering from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Sudies in Guadalajara, Mexico.

About the lesson

I usually ask to see their recent homework, notes and/or tests in order to identify their weaknesses or misconceptions and provide support in the areas the need it.

I've mainly worked with students from 9th through 12th grade.
