About Annie Laurie

I combine a deep understanding of mathematics with knowledge of the way students learn, as well as experience teaching. This combination allows me to pinpoint tutees' academic needs and provide tailored, high quality instruction.

I have a masters degree in mathematics from the University of California Davis and graduated with high honors in mathematics from Dartmouth College. I am also certified to teach high school mathematics and elementary education, and have training in mathematical pedagogy (including from the Brown Summer High School in Mathematics). I have put this pedagogy into practice while tutoring, teaching elementary and high school, and TA-ing for college students.

I love math, love teaching it, and love empowering my students to reach their "I get it!" moments.

About the lesson

It is important to me to come to my tutoring sessions as prepared as possible; this ensures I am efficient and respectful of my students' time. As such, when I get a new student I usually ask them for the name of the text/program they are using and a sample assignment, so I can fully understand their curriculum (e.g. theoretical versus applied calculus) and their teacher's expectations.

I then meet with students (virtually) to discuss their goals and expectations, as well as to get a sense of their strengths, weaknesses, and any gaps in their backround knowledge. With this information in hand I am able to tailor my instruction to my new students, are we are ready to go!

I have worked with students all the way from kindergarden to college students! While this is a very broad range, an understanding of how mathematical knowledge develops throughout grades helps me to understand my students. For example, algebra students often struggle with fractions. By understanding how fractions are introduced in 3rd grade, and then developed in 4th, 5th, and 6th, I can diagnose the exact area of student weakness and teach to it. The same hold for calculus students struggling with algebra, etc.!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would urge all students, particularly those seeking a tutor, to try to pinpoint exactly what they do not understand. It can be surprisingly hard to do! However, practicing this sort of metacognition won't only aid your teachers in helping you, it will serve you immensely in all areas of study.

It is also useful for me to know if a student wants to focus on a more immediate goal (e.g. passing a test, understanding integrals), would like help developing more general cross-cutting skills (e.g. using patterns, of abstract reasoning, to problem solve), or would like to do both.
