About Janet

The Thunderbird Academy offers help with math and science curriculum. At the Academy we are familiar with all aspects of how students learn math. We have built a tutoring program that doesn’t just read academic jargon to students. We pursue a level of understanding that can only be brought about through differentiation, scaffolding and hands-on explanations. We first appeal to the students most favorite way of learning. Then broaden that scope and attempt to make the student more self-reliant when it comes to learning. We do this by tutoring in several different learning styles and maturity level.

I am sole proprietor and started teaching in 1983. There are two certifications I hold:

grades (1-8) mathematics educational

grades (1-8) self-contained.

I had graduated from high school and my brother asked me for help with his algebra. I tried to help him with several examples and when he finally understood and had an aha moment, I was hooked. I loved helping people figure out math.

A bachelors of science in mathematics education. Awarded 1983 from the University of Texas at El Paso

I completed 143 hours at UTEP. My bachelors plus I educated myself in areas of applied mathematics.

Seventeen years of teaching.

Resource teacher for Army Education Outreach Program. GEMS. Hands on science labs for middle and high school students. Located at the Instrute for Research at San Antonio Medical Center. The labs were developed by scientists working at the Research center.

About the lesson

I start by introducing myself then I inquire about the student, in order to put them at ease. I like to connect with them and get an idea how they feel about math. It’s just as important as any special needs diagnosis, in my opinion. I play a couple of games that show me where they are not only cognitively but also what level of learning they can handle. I try to determine if the child is on a concrete level, etc. .
