About Michael

The one aspect of tutoring that I love the most is when the student(s) I am teaching finally has the "aha" moment. The moment when it clicks for the student and they now understand the concept. I've felt that as a student and now experiencing it as a tutor feels just as amazing.

I help students achieve their goals by walking alongside them while also making sure that they become independent. If one approach of teaching does not work, then I take another approach until the student undeerstands. I do not like giving up.

I have been a tutor for a net total of 1 year. 4 months at Kumon, (currently) 4 months at Mathnasium, and 4 months as a freelance tutor by word of mouth.

I am pursuing a Bachelors of Science Degree in Mathematics and Computer Science and have completed challenging courses such as Advanced Data Structures, Computer Organizations and Systems Programming, Software Tools and Techniques Laboratory, and Mathematics for Algorithms and Systems.

I also got an A in all high-school level mathematics classes ranging from Algebra 1 to AP Statistics, earning 5's in AP Calculus AB/BC and a 4 in AP Statistics.

I started teaching in Kumon during the summer of 2018 going into my senior year of high school.

I was an Instructor for Kumon and Mathnasium for 4 and 6 months, respectively, and I have completed my Basic Instructor training which went over the fundamentals of walking alongside and teaching a student that is struggling. I worked with hundreds of students over those months and have become very skilled at adapting to students' various learning styles.

About the lesson

When I first connect with a client, I usually ask them what they are having trouble with, specifically, and try to have them send me their work in advance so that I know what to expect when we do meet and also to be more efficient with our time. Once I have looked over the material and I meet with the new client, I ask them to walk me through their thought process so that I can understand the way they think and to determine what kind of teaching style works best and to proceed from there.

Make sure to hire a teacher that is willing to go that extra step to make sure you understand. A teacher that wants to see you succeed.

A recent event that I am fond of is when a friend I helped was able to distinguish stack and heap memory allocation and when the stack or heap was being accessed inside of a program. This is a concept that he had been struggling with but when he was able to explain to me when the stack or heap was being accessed, I felt elation. Helping students understand a concept and have that "aha" moment is one thing that I always enjoy with tutoring.

As of right now, my lessons start at $25/hour for computer science related topics. For mathematical topics like Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus, my lessons are $30/hour since I have a higher mastery over these concepts in comparison to computer science and can produce and provide higher quality tutoring.
