About Madison

I grew up in Tennessee and I have been tutoring off and on over the past 10 years. I have experience tutoring elementary, middle school and high school math, math and science ACT prep, macroeconomics and microeconomics and high school and intro college level.

When I was in high school I tutored elementary and middle school students in math as well as other highschoolers in ACT prep. I helped one student improve his score on the ACT science section by 8 points in just 2 sessions. I made a 31 on the ACT my freshman year and ultimately made a 34 (but my superscore is a 35). I took AP Macro and Microeconomics in highschool and have familiarity with the AP test. I made 5's on both AP exams. I also have tutored college students in introductory level economics courses. Because of my test scores (I was a National Merit Finalist) I earned a full-ride to the University of Alabama where I studied Economics. I know the huge difference that standardized test scores can make in helping college to be affordable and I want to empower people to make a small investment now for a huge future payoff!

Currently, I work full-time for a church but I have sporadically tutored students on the side. With the COVID-19 pandemic cause many schools to go partially or fully online, I know that many parents, teachers, and students are struggling. I have a passion for helping people and I want to aid in alleviating some level of stress when it comes to education.

Math and Economics are subjects that many people do not like. If I had a dollar for every time I've heard "I hate math" or "I hate Econ" I would probably be tutoring for free because I would have no need for extra cash, haha! What I have found is many students decide that they aren't good at math and can never be good at math. With economics, many students are fine with memorizing definitions, but when it comes to solving equations they stuggle because they have convinced themselves they "aren't good at math" and shut down.

I want to help combat that! I am passionate about helping people understand things. I don't just want students to memorize how to solve a certain equation, I want them to understand what they are doing and why so that they are able to apply that logic to other situations. Recently I tutored a college student who also happens to have an art business but was struggling with microeconomics and just wanted to get through the class. I was able to explain to her what she was learning in class in terms of her art business and help her to understand that it was actually very applicable to her life!

My favorite moments are when students exclaim "Oh wait, I get it! This isn't as hard as I thought"

Varies based on the student! I work with a wide age range as well as a variety of subjects, so it depends a lot on that. I like to do what makes the student most comfortable.

It is nice if I'm able to get an idea of where a student is at before I meet with them. Looking over past tests and assignments is one way I like to do that!

My ideal style of teaching is hands on. I like to work out problems with students and then let them work things out on their own and help them if they have problems. I want students to feel free and safe to ask questions and my ultimate goal is to make sure that they fully understand the material and can work out problems on by themselves.
