About Johnny

Drawing upon the experience of learning from and playing with the greatest musicians in the world, the Johnny Steele Music Academy offers lessons which are fun, engaging, and informative. For the past eight years, Johnny Steele has been priviledged to learn from the likes of Harvey Mason, Jeff Hamilton, Wynton Marslis, Billy Drummond, Gilbert Castellanos, and many others. He has compiled all of the information that has learned from these great masters into a teaching methodology that can be used for all ages, all styles, and all skill levels. Johnny Steele has been teaching drum lessons for 5 years and lessons in music theory, performance, piano playing, percussion, arranging, and composition for the past four years. I enjoy communicating my knowledge to students and getting to see people improve their skills as musicians. I love getting to see people fall more in love with the music they create.

I got started teaching by being offered teaching opportunities through various programs that I sent to as a teenager. These programs felt that it would be valuable for an alumnus to come back and share knowledge with new students. Since then, I've had a love for teaching.

I have a bachelors and masters degree in Jazz Drumming from The Juilliard School in NYC.

About the lesson

Our first lesson is always set up to gauge where the student is in terms of fundamental techniques and areas of playing. Once I have an idea of what the student is capable of, I can then structure my lessons based on what they need to improve on. I also structure lessons to capitalize and develop on the things that they already know.

Make sure they can demonstrate their expertise and have the credentials to back themselves up.

I recently recorded my debut album as a leader. The process of putting the album together is one that I will cherish forever.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should outline what it is they want most out of their musical experience. Do they want to just play for fun? Play gigs? Be world famous? This primary decision will determine what the remainder of the students needs are.

I offer my lessons in bundles. The price varies depending on the amount of time per lesson and the amount of lessons per month. Of course, depending on financial circumstances, I am always flexible to adjusting my prices. The chart comes in my introductory email to all prospective students.
