About Samantha
Hi! I'm Samantha Miklovic and I am a 2020 Kent State University graduate certified in 7th-12th grade Language Arts education. I have had lots of experience at 5 different middle and high schools in the Akron area in the past two years. As a tutor, I strive to help students comprehend concepts, develop skills, and achieve their goals with confidence. I look forward to hearing from you and getting the opportunity to work with you!
When I was in high school, I had one language arts teacher, Mr. Reinhardt, who changed my outlook on education and was more than just a teacher. I had always liked school because I like to learn, but my freshman language arts teacher made school even more enjoyable. He broke the mold that every other language arts teacher fit into up until this point. He made me think in ways I hadn’t before, made me fall in love with reading and literature (because prior to that year I wasn’t much of a reader), and made me see school, learning, and teachers in a different light with his unique style. He was also the first teacher I saw as more than just my teacher, but a mentor. He helped me grow not only academically, but personally. I could tell he cared about me, too. He showed me what teaching could be. It didn’t have to be routine, it didn’t have to be just sticking to the curriculum, giving out homework, and moving on. He sparked a passion for reading and language arts, and he made me see that teaching, done right, changes lives far beyond the classroom. I wanted to have the same kind of impact he had on me for other students. I wanted to have the opportunity to make school, and language arts in particular, more fun and less routine and mundane. I wanted to spark the passion for reading in other students and make them see how wonderful and magical reading can be. Just as Mr. Reinhardt had done for me.
I feel that my time at Kent State University, the numerous education and English courses I have taken, and my field experiences at 2 middle schools, 2 high schools, and the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center has greatly prepared me for the work that I do. I have a Bachelors of Science in Education degree from Kent State University as well as a licensure in 7-12 grade Integrated Language Arts Education.

When working with a new student, I want to begin by getting to know them. It is improtant to get to know their skill level and where they are academically, but it is just as important, if not more important, to get to know the student as an individual and form a relationship with the student. I would find out more about them personally as well as find out what I can do to help them succeed, what their goals are, what concerns they may have, etc. I would keep solid, continued communication with the student, and do everything in my ability to help them.
I have worked with a variety of different students of different age levels and backgrounds. The youngest students I have worked with have been 13-years-old and the oldest have been 18-years-old. I have worked with students who come from rural, suburban, and urban backgrounds.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If the student has a good understanding of their needs, the teacher can better address those needs and provide assitance. Students should consider what their areas for improvement are, what their goals are, and what the teacher can do to help. The student should consider what areas or skills they could use improvement on so that the teacher knows what to focus on with their help. The student should consider their goals so the teacher knows exactly what they need to be striving for. It also helps if the student can identify more specifically what the teacher can do, but if the student cannot articulate that to the teacher because they are uncertain of the kind of help they need, that is okay! The teacher is there for them and will do anything possible to get them the individualized help they need. Simply telling the teacher how they best learn, if they are more visual or auditory, how they study, etc. is one small way the student can help the teacher help them.
