About Sheila
I offer individualized reading and writing tutoring for elementary grades. Tutoring sessions begin with an assessment so a plan can be designed to target your child's weaknesses and build upon their strengths.
I am an elementary school reading specialist in the area of Early Middle Childhood Literacy with certifications in Elementary Education and Specific Learning Disabilities. Over the past 30 years, I have been a Reading Interventionist working with struggling readers in a small group setting, Reading Recovery teacher for at-risk first grade students, taught grades kindergarten, 1st and 2nd, and work with special needs children with learning disabilities in 1st - 7th grade.
I enjoy helping kids learn how to read. It's more than just helping a student sound out words, it's instilling the love for reading and writing. I love watching their faces light up when they have just read a book they weren't able to before.
I enjoy working with children and knew I wanted to become a teacher!

Before beginning a tutoring session an evaluation is necessary so tutoring can target your child's weaknesses and build on their strengths.
I have worked with a variety of students with and without disabilities from kindergarten through 7th grade.
I had a recent teaching experience with a child who was struggling with figuring out a tricky word. I prompted him that he knew a word that worked like this one. The word was sandwich, and he found the part "and" and quickly said it and then figured out the word “sand”. Then he looked at the picture and knew the word was sandwich. His face lit up with a huge grin. He finally understood the strategy of using what you know and applying it in other words that have similar patterns. That's what makes teaching magical – seeing the light-bulb go off!

She makes reading fun for my 3rd grader. She has been able to help my daughter find the best way to learn. We love going to her lessons. She gives me tips and ideas to help my child at home. She has been a blessing to my child's education.
Words cannot describe how grateful we are to have found Mrs. Duck. She has help our son tremendously. Ryan started several levels below his age/grade with reading. Now he is right where he needs to be. Mrs. Duck continues to work with him and help him with his reading, writing and confidence. I would recommend her to anyone!!
Mrs. Duck is such a wonderful reading tutor and without her help I’m not sure my son would have done as well in reading as he did when he ended first grade.
My son started tutoring with her at the end of January with a reading level D. His goal was to end the school year with a reading level J, and with her help he succeeded!
Mrs. Duck is so inviting and really makes your children feel comfortable when they come into her home to learn. She truly sparked an excitement for reading that my son never really had. We were so fortunate to have had her help in my sons journey in reading.Mrs Duck was wonderful with my daughter. She helped her overcome reading and comprehension struggles. My daughter always looked forward to the sessions. Mrs Sheila Duck helped build a great foundation. My daughter ended up graduating high school with her college AA degree and highest honors.
Wonderful tutor, Mrs. Duck is always so prepared and brings a wealth of experience directly to your child.
Mrs. Duck was an amazing tutor for our niece. Mrs. Duck had a very structured way of learning how to read. Each week Mrs. Duck sent home a bag full of reading things to work on till next session. Our niece was very behind in reading when she entered 3rd grade. We did twice a week tutoring till the end of third grade. We saw a huge difference with school work and confidence with reading.
Mrs Duck is the best tutor EVER!
She spent a great deal of time preparing special reading materials for my granddaughter. The first day of tutoring we were sent home with a special backpack full of creative books and flash cards that Mrs Duck made for us to help with at home reading practice.
Mrs Duck loves what she does and my granddaughter adores her.
I cannot say enough about the positive experience we had with her.Mrs. Duck is always prepared with a lesson for my daughter. My daughter was a grade level behind and after 2 sessions a week during the summer, she is on grade level. My daughter also loves when she gets to throw away sight words because she master them.
Mrs. Duck, is not only extremely patient with her students, but she's fun and engaging as well. I've had two of my six children see Mrs. Duck for reading tutoring and she had them reading on their own in no time!
My son has dyslexia and is resistant to reading. Mrs. Duck is very patient with him. I like how she emphasizes vocabulary and writing skills. She also tries to select books that the students are interested in.
