Most important with a new student is for me to get to know them. First lessons tend to be a bit longer than an hour because of this. We'll talk about goals and aspirations to get an overview of everything and then dive right in with some playing time. I'm of the belief that lessons are driven by students and it's my job to meet that student where they are and help them to move closer to their goals each week.
I work mostly with middle school and high school students but am willing to teach just about anyone!
For a student looking for a teacher, there are two primary things to keep in mind. Firstly, this teacher is someone who you'll be seeing a lot of, so make sure you get along well and can see yourself spending private time with this person on a regular basis. Secondly, be communicative with your teacher and make sure that they understand your wants and needs and that they can help you accomplish your goals.
