About Patrick

Step-by-Step Brass provides personal and specialized instruction to anyone wishing to learn to play a brass instrument or improve their playing ability at any level.

Instructor Patrick Greene is a graduate of Troy University in Troy, Al. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree as well as a State of Alabama Class B Rank II Instrumental Music teaching license.

Mr. Greene is an up and coming French Horn and Trombone player and brass instructor. He has 5 years of private and small group teaching experience in Northwest Florida and Alabama, teaching brass players of beginning, intermediate, and college level experience. He has performed with the Troy University Symphony band as their Principal French Horn, and has 4 years of gigging experience as a horn and trombone player in the cities of Dothan, Montgomery, Troy, and Huntsville, Alabama.

Mr. Greene has a passion for teaching and connecting with students, and has a keen talent for designing a specialized curriculum for each player which is catered to their strengths and weaknesses, goals, and level of commitment. Every student will have the opportunity to achieve and progress, regardless of their level, and will learn to love the act of making, listening to, and practicing music.

I began my teaching career in 2015 as a college student. I had been asked by several band directors in the Northwest Florida and South Alabama region to come and teach at their band camps. That summer, I taught at 3 different band camps teaching both private and group session brass players, mostly focusing on French Horn/mellophone and trumpet players, as this was my strength.

As I continued my college education, I began privately studying the trombone, and over the course of my 4 years in college, I had developed proficiency in euphonium as well. These skills made me more valuable to band directors in the area who knew my skillset, and I continued to receive offers from around the state of Alabama to be a summer brass instructor for various high school programs.

During my final year of college, I took part in a Music Education internship in Dothan, Al. I was to shadow a band director in the school every day for a semester. This experience changed everything for me. As my first real teaching experience, I began to learn about the realities of teaching in the school every day, the importance of developing professional and friendly relationships with students, and the ins and outs of being a band director. I taught beginning band during this time, as well as conducted the high school symphonic band, and lectured AP Music Theory and Music Composition in the classroom. These experiences taught me the optimal methods of group instruction, and also greatly informed my private instruction skills with an understanding of how to structure curriculum based on students' strengths and weaknesses.

My Music Education training in college has prepared me for private instruction in 3 main ways:

1. I have been able to develop my individual playing ability on not only the French Horn, but also the Trombone and Trumpet. These have allowed me to understand various aspects of how brass instruments are played, and the optimal ways in which they should be taught in order to build good habits from the start and have the greatest chance at success every time you pick up a brass instrument.

2. Through my education courses, clinical experience in schools, and during my education internship, I have developed the ability to create curriculum and structure students' learning in ways which yield not only long term success, but short term success as well. Having taught music students of all levels, I understand how to break tasks down to their simplest and most understandable terms. I have experience crafting practice plans for students which addresses their weaknesses and bolsters their strengths, and executing class-wide curriculum for beginning level players in order to develop good playing and practicing habits for long term success.

About the lesson

First, I will always start with where the student is- be they a beginner, intermediate, or upper level. This means doing some preliminary evaluations of the student's ability, always with the goal in mind of success and achievement, never to undermine. This gives me a good idea of the student's current ability and informs how I structure their curriculum for improvement.

Second, I will construct a curriculum for each individual student which is specifically catered to their strengths and weaknesses, and their experience. Each student will have a weekly opportunity to succeed and see the results of their progress through Step-by-Step instruction and practicing techniques.

Finally, I always try to develop not only a professional relationship with students, but also a friendly one. I believe in having friendly and professional relationships with each student which gives both myself and the student the opportunity to learn more about one another and create an amicable environment for optimal instruction, dialogue, and feedback. Each student is special, and brings different traits and personalities to the table. All are special, and all deserve to be recognized and encouraged.

I have taught students of all ages, including teaching elementary music lessons, middle school beginning and intermediate band, as well as high school intermediate and advanced band.

I have privately instructed students of middle school and high school level, as well as young college level players.

Be sure to find a teacher not only with the proper level of experience and expertise, but also try to experiment and find the type of personality you would like to work with. I believe it is much more beneficial to work with a teacher who can understand you and your point of view and advance your abilities through a dialogue rather than work with a teacher who makes you feel bad all the time and doesn't provide opportunities to succeed regularly.

I am incredibly fond of the time I spent during my internship in Dothan, Al teaching students at the 6-12 grade level. This experience shaped how I view teaching both in the group and private setting. The opportunity to reach students through music was incredible, and to be able to develop professional and friendly relationships with students made the journey all the more enjoyable for all parties.
