About Roger

The systems of teaching I’ve employed for many years are fundamental brass techniques such as, embouchure development (positioning of lips, teeth, and tongue on the instrument mouthpiece), breathing and breath support from the diaphragm, tonging or note attack (start of the note), correct posture, and music theory.

At a very early age I started my classical trumpet education with Samuel Krauss, former Principal trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra and subsequently with Louis Opalesky, Principal trumpet of the Pennsylvania Ballet and Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, for a combined total of approximately eight years. I later studied musical theory and jazz concepts with Lenny Tristano, a modern jazz era innovator, and Gerald Price, both iconic jazz pianists. Over the years, I have played trumpet on the Philadelphia jazz scene with the likes of tenor sax Bootsie Barns and bassist Mike Boone, among others, I hosted jazz jam sessions at Ortlieb’s Jazz Haus and other well known jazz clubs in the area, I’ve performed in many prominent society orchestras in the tri-state area, I’ve played at a number of churches for weddings and funeral ceremonies, casinos, cruise ships, etc. I have seasonal engagements at the Jersey Shore and I freelance with various big bands and other ensembles in the area. In the last 35 years I’ve been on the faculty of the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey directing the jazz band and participating in the pit orchestra for theatrical productions. I currently provide private instruction at Music & Arts Center in Princeton, New Jersey, in my home studio, at students homes, or on-line.

About the lesson

Interview student to get an idea of their goals and ambitions. Listen to them play their instrument to asses their level of musicianship and technical ability. Determine their knowledge of basic theory, eg. time signatures, key signatures, note values, etc. I always ask a student what music they listen to and introduce them to the centuries of great classical music and the beautiful creativity of jazz improvisation.

Through the years it has given me great pleasure to teach students of all ages and levels, beginners to college music majors, and adults. With young beginning students I enjoy watching their reactions as they progress and realize “I can play!”. Also, I get great satisfaction in teaching students who are middle aged or seniors (yes, seniors) that may have played when younger and are inspired to pick up their instrument again by a child or grandchild who’s playing in school band. I have taught countless beginners and I consider this stage critical for brass players. My emphasis is on mouthpiece and tongue placement, breathing techniques, finger positions, and good posture.
