About Katelyn

I want to teach my students important life-skills through music while having fun at the same time. They will be lifelong music learners. That is why I focus my teaching on self-expression. Making music is special because it gives the performer a different and perhaps more powerful medium of expression than they can experience in any other area.

My qualifications:

Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Master of Music and Performer Diploma in Viola Performance, University of Michigan, Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance and Music Education

My method:

I utilize a combination of the Suzuki method, the pedagogy of Mimi Zweig, whom I studied with at Indiana University, and what I have learned from teaching in public schools.

Teaching music became my passion when I was a student participant in public school music. I noticed how much impact these teachers had on students' lives, and I wanted to do the same thing. My passion was strengthened through my student teaching and field work experience. I cherished the moments when students smile when they learn something that musicians take for granted on a daily basis.

I love teaching privately because I can cater the lessons to each individual students' interests and strengths. I have taught students of varying ages and levels, and am currently accepting violinists and violists of any age or level.

I started teaching during my undergraduate studies in music education at University of Michigan. I maintained a studio of private violin and viola students and also gained experience teaching in groups.

Education: Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Master of Music and Performer Diploma in Viola Performance. University of Michigan, Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance and Music Education.

I am currently certified to teach K-12 Music in the state of Michigan.

About the lesson

I use the first lesson to assess the student's level, and I will cater my teaching to build on the student's prior experience and their strengths as a musician. If the student is completely new to the violin or viola, I will start by giving them guidance to purchasing an instrument and bow, and we will start from the basics - open strings and pizzicato.

Most of my experience teaching has been with students 8th grade and younger, however I have worked with older students and adults as well. I am accepting students of any age and any level currently.
