About Curtis

I have been a personal trainer for over 25 years in central Iowa. I have been a Pilates instructor for the past 16 years. I am a 500 hour registered yoga teacher specializing in guided ashtanga yoga.

The focus and any of these disciplines is on doing the exercise with correct form! Too many times we participate in exercises (yoga included) where we are not instructed as to what the correct form should be. How are you supposed to know if you’re making progress if you don’t know where the finish line is?

In individual sessions, pictures are taken of the student in the poses as they do them and compared with pictures of them in the poses as they are supposed to be done. This way the student has a handout that they can refer to in order to see if they’re making progress along with a picture of what the final product should look like.

I love opening the eyes of students. One of the best things about teaching yoga is when students have the ‘Aha moment’!

I have been in the fitness industry for over 20 years. I was one of the first personal trainers in Central Iowa back in the early 90s. I have taught pretty much everything! I taught step, slide, spinning, body sculpt, High impact aerobics and stretching classes. I became a personal trainer and then transitioned into teaching Pilates. From there I discovered my love of yoga and have spent the last four years in continuing education to become a 500 hour registered yoga teacher! I continue my education daily looking for the next level!

About the lesson

I need to ascertain where the students are in their practice before doing anything. A good deal of time is spent seeing what the understanding level of the student is throughout the practice. The Yoga Curious Class, while being a workout, is basic so that no one is left behind, even if it’s the first time they come to class. Flexibility is not required. What is required is a real desire to learn.

my students WANT to learn. They like to think! You do not come to class to turn your mind off.

There is a correct safe way to do yoga without risk of injury, no matter what your level of experience has been. I had to leave a very good position teaching at Lifetime Athletic because they would not allow me to correct students posture and poses. They wanted me to teach by saying things like , “Whatever you think chair pose is, do it now”. I was being told not to correct people, even though it was obvious they were going to injure themselves.

People come to me To do yoga because they want to learn how to do poses correctly.
