About Joshua

Joshua Barnett is a writer and experienced writing tutor from Little Rock, Arkansas, now based in Brooklyn, New York. He received his MFA in fiction from Hunter College, where he studied with writers including Peter Carey, Adam Haslett, and Sigrid Nunez. At Hunter, Joshua taught both Creative Writing and Composition, working closely with students to improve their essays, strengthen their reading and writing skills, and develop confidence in their own voices. He has also worked one-on-one as a writing coach, helping students prepare for standardized tests, polish college application essays, and refine graduate-level projects. As a Hertog Fellow, Joshua served as a research assistant for author Rivka Galchen. He earned his B.A. in Psychology from Hendrix College, where he was a fiction editor for The Ionian literary magazine. He also served on the board of the Volunteer Action Center’s Literacy Program, a nonprofit committed to children’s literacy in Northwest Arkansas. Joshua’s teaching is grounded in patience and creating a safe, encouraging space to learn. He is passionate about helping students—from middle and high schoolers to adult learners—strengthen their writing, master critical reading skills, and reach their academic and creative goals.

About the lesson

Hi, I’m Joshua! I’m an experienced writing coach and tutor with a background in both creative and academic writing. For years, I’ve helped students and adult learners sharpen their writing skills, build confidence, and achieve their goals—whether that’s writing a standout college application essay or polishing a graduate-level paper.

My approach is practical, encouraging, and tailored to each student. I know that writing can feel intimidating, especially under time pressure, so I focus on breaking the process down into manageable steps. Together, we’ll work on strategies for reading comprehension, rhetorical analysis, and essay writing that go beyond memorization—helping you think critically, organize your ideas, and express yourself clearly.
