About Sharri
I love the cinematic form and have dedicated my life to studying its tools and developments. I believe that each individual is as unique as their fingerprints and their approach to creative projects is just as unique. With that, I approach teaching by identifying the voice of the filmmaker and laying out the best techniques to utilize originality in visual storytelling, film, or cinema.

Shari was my professor during my master’s program, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better mentor. When I started the program, I had limited knowledge, but she always made me feel valued and never once made me feel inadequate. She was genuinely eager to hear my thoughts, and her enthusiasm for teaching was contagious. She quickly became one of my favorite professors, and anyone would be incredibly fortunate to learn from her.
Sharri is a fantastic educator and filmmaker - as fellow faculty I'm always impressed at her ability to distill her extensive knowledge, experience, and skill into clear, practical, invaluable lessons. Every student she works with comes away better for it. Highly recommend!
Sharri is so warm and welcoming while also being incredibly knowledgeable in her field and able to clearly teach her lessons and explain the concepts. She walks you through each step you could possibly need and is there to answer any questions you might have. She is a wonderful person and one of the best teachers I’ve ever had!
Sharri was my professor at UCLA Extension. She taught the Screenwriting 101 class. I was completely new to screenwriting and I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher and chaperone. She was kind, yet candid, and she conveyed the art form and its techniques with such grace and mastery that I found them fairly easy to grasp and apply. Her talent and dedication left me with the confidence to say that any student under her tutelage is in good hands.
Sharri is an amazing teacher! She was my thesis advisor in grad school and is great to work with. My film would not have been what it is without her guidance. She has a wealth of industry knowledge and experience and goes above and beyond for her students. Highly highly recommend!
I always found Sharri to be the most knowledgeable, rewarding, honest, friendly, and humorous professor during my graduate learning journey. It was an honor to be taught by her. Sharri will guide her students to the direction they need to go and deliver information that can be leveraged in the professional world. I highly recommend Sharri!
I had Sharri as one of my first year as a graduate film student. Sharri is one of the most industry knowledgeable lecturing professionals I’ve ever had the pleasure of learning from. Her teaching approach allowed me to adapt to making well-informed and necessary decisions in order to meet the fast-paced, immediate schedule demands of our graduate curriculum. Sharri is a great teacher and a great source of knowledge and experience and her teaching approach will be an asset to your career development. I recommend her class or the chance to learn from her to any student.
Sharri mentored me in my graduate thesis project. She truly gave me guidance without telling me how I should express my opinion - or what opinion I should have. She presented case studies and asked questions to mentor me in a way that helped me go deeper and find my own reasoning.
Amazing mentor, truly truy cares about her students.Sharri is the consummate professional. She is extremely knowledgeable in every aspect of Production. She has many years of experience both on sets and teaching. She understands how to help students and film professionals alike learn and, or hone their production skills. I met Sharri in graduate film school at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. I have worked side by side with Sharri on sets for more than 20 years. I highly recommend her.
Sharri Hefner is able to distill her insights and expertise in Screenwriting and Film Production into simple lessons that I use, every day, to elevate my work. Absolutely invaluable!
I've worked with Sharri as a filmmaker and know how dilligent, creative, professional and nurturing she is with talent and her projects. I know she offers the same to those shoe works with as students.
I highly recommend Sharri as an extraordinary teacher, tutor, and filmmaker, as well an all around wonderful human being. She's incredibly smart, funny and practical but also very supportive and encouraging. I have learned so much from her lessons. Over the span of many years I have repeatedly sought out her screenwriting and production advice and am always grateful for her input.
Sharri and I went to film school together. In these intervening years, I've witnessed Sharri become not only a talented, knowledgable and expert producer, but also one who has the rare skill to be able to impart this wisdom to students. She is honest, organized, passionate about what she does with complete mastery of the profession.
Sharri is amazing. She is the most trustworthy tutor I have ever had. At first Sharri was just my professor at Cal State University Long Beach, but then she became a mentor that I would not trade the world for. Sharri not only supplied me with vast knowledge of production management but got me actual paid positions in the film industry. And even after I graduated, she is always a reliable resource when I need help. She really knows her stuff. It is a real privilege to study under the tutelage of this talented and experienced film producer. There is no mentor that I could recommend that compares to this master of the craft. I guarantee it.
Sharri Hefner helped me fall in love with directing via a Zoom class during the first summer of the global COVID pandemic.
It was the summer of 2020 and I had been placed on furlough from my job. I had taken Sharri’s producing class that spring. Even with all her enthusiasm for the subject and my many years behind a computer providing an adeptness with the budgeting and scheduling software, I knew by the end of the class that that side of producing was not for me. Having been placed on furlough, I decided to take that directing class with Sharri knowing full well that we would only be learning on Zoom due to the unfolding pandemic.
Sharri brought that same energy and enthusiasm to our class. I had never directed before and learned the basics. I fell in love with it. Sharri understood the challenges to working on Zoom and helped us find ways to do our prep, cast, work with actors, and record our scenes on Zoom.
Sharri’s joy and excitement for filmmaking is infectious and permeates how she interacts with everyone on and off set.
Sharri is among the finest instructors I have had the privilege of learning from. She is exceptionally organized, adept at explaining complex concepts, and possesses a remarkable ability to nurture her students' growth as storytellers and filmmakers. I can confidently assert that my attainment of a graduate degree would not have been possible without her invaluable guidance.
As a professional, she exemplifies kindness and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as both a filmmaker and educator. I wholeheartedly recommend anyone seeking lessons, classes, or tutoring to pursue the opportunity to engage with her instruction.Sharri was my professor in college. I took a film class. Sharri was very thorough and patient with her instruction. She is knowledgeable about film production. She was able to answer all of my questions. She is kind and easy to get a long with. Her passion for her work is evident.
Sharri is a seasoned professional and an amazing teacher who makes miracles happen. She can coach you to your dream production, no matter what your budget. I’ve worked with her on several productions and am always amazed by her energy and tenacity. Whenever I need feeeback on a screenplay I turn to sharri as a trusted source. She gives insightful, helpful feedback at every stage.
Sharri is a talented filmmaker and professor who brings a wealth of film industry experience to the classroom. I have known her since film school at New York University and we collaborated on projects and stayed in touch over the years. Last year when I had a directing assignment during the semester, Sharri stepped in and served as a substitute for my screenwriting classes for two weeks. Needless to say, the students didn't miss a beat and they loved her honest, straightforward feedback on their writing. Sharri doesn't stroke egos, but she also doesn't crush dreams. She is a both a colleague and a friend and I highly recommend her.
Sharri and I met in graduate film school at New York University twenty years ago where she was an excellent producer for short films and a grad teaching assistant. She has since gone on to produce feature films and teach at New York Film Academy and film programmes in Universities in Southern California. Her students love her for her straight-shooting style of communication and endless support of their projects. I would trust Sharri with any creative endeavor.
