About Sophie
I hold a first-class English Literature degree from the University of Bristol (2012), with experience writing top-mark essays across genres from the Medieval to the Postmodern. My dissertation explored haunting in Victorian literature, but one of my favourite essays unpacked the absurdity of language in Alice in Wonderland. I also have a strong grounding in the Gothic tradition, having studied texts like Frankenstein and The Turn of the Screw at school. Alongside foundational authors and core texts including the works of Shakespeare and Blake. Over the years, I’ve supported friends and family members with academic writing, helping them find structure, flow and clarity. I even helped my stepsister with her Music and Maths joint honours essays which proves that good essay writing is transferable across subjects. Professionally, I’ve worked in marketing and communications for over a decade, which has given me strategic experience in simplifying complex ideas and writing persuasively for different audiences. I bring this clarity and structure into my mentoring approach.

I offer online English Literature mentoring for A-Level and undergraduate students who want to build confidence, clarity, and structure in their essay writing. Especially those who enjoy thinking deeply and want to express their ideas effectively. This is my first foray into formal tutoring, so my approach is calm, collaborative, and tailored to the individual. I don’t follow rigid structures - think of it more as a mentoring session to help you plan your ideas clearly, build compelling arguments, and feel more confident in your voice. Sessions typically last 60 minutes, and can include discussion, working through drafts, and feedback on existing written work. If you have a specific assignment or text in mind, I’ll be sure to prepare in advance to make the most of our time together. While I’m not familiar with every exam board specification, I’m always happy to review mark schemes and the syllabus to ensure our sessions stay focused and relevant. And as a mental health advocate, I offer a supportive space where students are safe to explore ideas without judgement and ask questions.
