About Kathryne

My name is Katie and I am a first grade teacher. I currently hold my state teaching certification and have over 12 years of teaching experience. I graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education and Special Education and currently I am in school earning my Master's Degree with a concentration in Literacy.

Over the years, my teaching and tutoring experience have had me working with children from grades kindergarten to sixth grade. I focus on teaching literacy (reading, writing, and working with words.

I believe in creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing learning atmosphere that fits the diverse needs of my students. I believe all students need a calm and comfortable yet stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially.

As an educator, it is my goal to help my students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing a learning environment that supports risk-taking, invites the sharing of ideas, and encourages self-discovery.

When I am not teaching, I love traveling, painting, and spending time with my daughter.

About the lesson

I believe that as a literacy tutor, it is a unique and rewarding experience that requires creativity, patience, and a deep understanding of child development. As an educator, I recognize that each child has various learning styles and techniques. I consistently differentiate my instruction which involves tailoring my lessons to meet the diverse needs of my students, whether through varied instructional strategies, materials, or pacing.

I find that combining phonics (teaching the sounds of letters and letter combinations) with the whole language approach (recognizing words as whole pieces of language) can be effective in teaching reading. This balanced literacy approach helps my students develop decoding skills and reading fluency.

Furthermore, I believe that keeping families involved in their child's education is crucial and can have a significant impact on the student. Having regular communication and providing activities that involve family participation are effective strategies in keeping families in the loop of their child’s reading success.

My tutoring concentration focuses on teaching children in grades K-6 with a focus in literacy (reading, writing, and working with words).
