About Waylon
I am a piano tutor with over 5 years of teaching experience. I work with students of all levels, from beginners to advanced players. I have successfully taught between 150 to 200 students. Many of my students have cleared graded exams with good marks, performed in recitals, and developed a lasting love for music. My teaching philosophy is rooted in flexibility, positivity, and clear communication. I believe that learning piano should be enjoyable and pressure free. I adapt my methods to suit each student's learning style and goals. I focus on strong technique, sight-reading, music theory, and expression. I also encourage creativity through improvisation and exploring different genres. I am patient and supportive. I celebrate small wins and give honest feedback. I am proud of my students' growth and their confidence at the keyboard. My goal is to make every lesson productive, fun, and meaningful.

My teaching approach is guided by five key principles: flexibility, adaptability, communication, integrity, and positivity. I believe that learning piano is a personal journey. My job is to meet students where they are and help them move forward in a way that feels natural and rewarding. Flexibility is central to my teaching. I understand that every student has a unique schedule, energy level, and set of goals. Some want to prepare for exams. Others play for fun. Some are busy college students with limited time. I adapt my lesson structure and practice expectations to fit their lifestyle. This keeps learning sustainable and enjoyable. Adaptability means I adjust my methods based on how a student learns best. Some respond well to visual aids like diagrams and colour-coded notes. Others learn by listening and imitating. Some need hands-on guidance at the keyboard. I switch between approaches until I find what clicks. I also adapt my pace to each student. If a concept takes time to sink in, we slow down. If a student grasps something quickly, we move ahead confidently. Communication is another cornerstone. I explain concepts in simple, clear language. I avoid jargon and make sure students understand the why behind every exercise. I also encourage open dialogue. Students are welcome to ask questions, share frustrations, or suggest pieces they love. This two-way communication builds trust and keeps lessons engaging. Integrity means I am honest about progress. I celebrate achievements but I also give constructive feedback when something needs work. I never inflate abilities just to please a student. I set realistic expectations and respect their time and money. Positivity creates a warm environment. I use encouragement and praise to build confidence. Mistakes are treated as learning opportunities, not failures. I keep energy high and lessons fun.
My methodology covers a wide range of piano subjects. Technique is a major focus. I teach proper hand posture, finger independence, legato and staccato touch, and dynamic control. I use scales, arpeggios, and Hanon exercises to build finger strength and evenness. Sight-reading is developed through daily practice. I use graded materials to help students recognize notes, rhythms, and musical patterns quickly. This reduces dependency on memorization and builds reading fluency. Music theory is integrated into every lesson. I teach note reading, intervals, chord structure, key signatures, and time signatures. I show students how theory applies directly to the pieces they play. This helps them learn faster and understand music at a deeper level. Ear training is included to sharpen listening skills. I use interval recognition, chord identification, and rhythmic dictation to help students develop relative pitch. Repertoire is selected to match each student's taste and level. I guide them through classical, jazz, pop, blues, and film music. I teach phrasing, expression, and interpretation to make performances musical.
Improvisation and composition are offered for students who are interested. I teach basic chord progressions and scales to help them create melodies and arrangements. This encourages creativity and keeps lessons fresh. Sight-playing and lead sheet reading are also taught for students who want to play in bands or accompany others. I teach how to read chord symbols and create accompaniments from simple charts. Each lesson has a clear flow. We start with warm-ups and technical exercises. Then we work on sight-reading and theory. The main part of the lesson focuses on repertoire and applying techniques. I end with a review and weekly practice plan. I use recordings to help students hear their progress. I assess growth regularly and adjust goals accordingly. My aim is to nurture independent, confident pianists who love playing and continue learning on their own.
