About Li-Jen

I specialize in helping people who struggle with pitch when singing.

If you often feel like you are singing correctly but are told otherwise, or if you find it difficult to locate your starting note in choir, you are not alone. In most cases, this is not a talent issue, but a lack of a clear system to hear and correct pitch.

With my ability of Absolute Pitch (AP) and practical experience in choir singing, I can accurately identify pitch issues that you may not be aware of. More importantly, I focus on helping you develop the ability to recognize and correct those issues yourself.

My teaching approach is built around three key elements:

- Developing a clear sense of pitch positioning (AP-inspired thinking)
- Acquiring the ability to anchor your pitch using standard staff notation and the sounds produced by surrounding performers in a choir setting (choir-based practice)
- Building self-correction ability (inspired by Montessori learning principles)

I also draw from my experience in early childhood education, where I regularly work with complete beginners. This allows me to break down complex skills into simple, step-by-step learning processes.

Lessons are tailored to your level and goals. You may bring your own songs or choir scores, and we will work directly on them with real-time feedback.

My goal is not just to correct you during the lesson, but to help you become independent in recognizing and fixing your own pitch.

Have you ever experienced this?
- You feel like you're singing the right notes, but others say you're off pitch
- During choir rehearsals, you often struggle to find your starting note
- You want to practise, but you don’t know what exactly is going wrong

Many people assume this is a matter of “talent”, and some even label themselves as “tone-deaf”.

But in most cases, that’s not actually true.

Through my long-term involvement in choir singing, fellow singers have often noticed my ability of absolute pitch (AP).
From their perspective, I can consistently sing the correct notes across different parts and detect pitch issues that others may not even be aware of.

This gives me a clear advantage when it comes to identifying and understanding pitch.

However, while helping others correct pitch issues, I gradually discovered something more fundamental:

Most people simply have never developed the ability to judge and correct pitch on their own.

As a result, they may not even realise when they are off, or passively rely on external correction (e.g., a conductor).

This kind of learning process is often inefficient, and over time, it leads to frustration and loss of confidence.

Based on this understanding, I broke the problem down and developed a training approach centred around “self-correction”.

Instead of relying on constant external feedback, this method helps you gradually build the ability to hear, identify, and correct your own pitch.

Specifically, my teaching integrates three key aspects:

1. Absolute-pitch–inspired thinking
Helping you build a clear sense of pitch positioning, like having an internal coordinate system for pitch. This allows you to quickly and accurately locate the correct notes when you encounter different melodies, without having to work them out through complex music theory.

2. Choir-based pitch navigation skills
Helping you learn to read standard staff notation used in choir settings and develop a broader reading perspective. This allows you to understand other voice parts or accompaniment while singing your own part, and use them to orient yourself musically.

3. Self-correction ability (inspired by Montessori learning principles)
Helping you gradually develop the ability to identify and fix pitch issues independently, without relying on others

In addition, drawing from my practical experience in early childhood education, I am used to working with learners who start from zero.
This means I naturally break down complex skills into simple, step-by-step processes that are easy to follow.

As a result, even if you have no prior background at all, you will be able to clearly understand each step and steadily build your pitch accuracy.

Lessons are primarily one-on-one. Small group sessions may be arranged upon request.
Content is tailored to your needs, and you are welcome to bring your own songs or choir scores for practice, with real-time feedback and correction throughout the session.

If you would like to:

- Clearly recognise whether your pitch is correct while singing
- Reliably find your starting notes in choir rehearsals
- Know exactly what is going wrong in your practice, and how to fix it

Feel free to send me a message with a brief description of your situation and goals, and we can arrange a lesson.
