About Julian
I am a committed guitarist with more than 30 years of playing experience, and I bring a learner-centered approach to every lesson. Beyond my musical background, I have extensive pedagogical experience from my 14 years as a lecturer at Singapore Polytechnic, where I taught communication skills to diverse groups of learners. I am currently deepening my expertise through a Master of Education at the University of Waikato, strengthening my understanding of how people learn and how to design effective, motivating lessons.
This blend of long-term guitar experience and formal educational training allows me to teach with clarity, structure, and patience. Students can expect well-planned lessons, clear demonstrations, and supportive guidance that builds confidence at every step. My goal is to create a reliable, encouraging learning environment where beginners and developing players feel safe and inspired to grow their musical skills.

I offer 60‑minute private guitar lessons designed to help learners build technique, musical confidence, and a lifelong enjoyment of playing. My approach is practical, encouraging, and grounded in more than 30 years of real-world guitar experience.
My goal is to make guitar learning enjoyable and motivating, especially for beginners. I teach using a hands-on, music-first methodology that focuses on building skills through pop songs, repetition, and practical application rather than heavy theory. Students learn by doing, supported by clear demonstrations, guided practice, and personalised feedback.
Techniques & Methods I Use
- Step-by-step skill progression — chords, strumming patterns, rhythm control
- Song-based learning — using familiar songs to teach technique and musicality
- Ear training and listening skills — helping students recognise patterns and play more intuitively
- Practical theory — only what’s needed to support playing (chord families, keys, progressions)
- Confidence-building practice routines — short, achievable exercises tailored to each student
- Performance readiness — for learners who want to play at school events, church, or busking
Lesson Length

My Experience
I have been playing guitar for over 30 years, performing in various informal and community settings, and developing a strong intuitive understanding of rhythm, musical expression, and contemporary playing styles. While I do not have formal music school training, my long-term experience allows me to teach in a way that is practical, relatable, and grounded in real playing.
