About Arabella
I built a career playing keyboards on tour and in recording sessions long before I ever considered teaching, and that hands-on, occasionally chaotic background still shapes everything about how I run a lesson today. Fifteen years into teaching, I've worked with around four hundred eighty students, most drawn to me specifically because they want real, usable playing skills rather than purely academic training. I never went the conservatory route, and I'm upfront about that, because my strength lies in actual stage and studio experience rather than theoretical polish. I work particularly well with students who want to join bands, write original music, or eventually gig themselves, since that's the exact world I spent years living in. My teaching style is direct, occasionally blunt, shaped by real deadlines and real pressure rather than an unhurried academic pace. I've seen plenty of technically gifted players struggle the moment they're handed a chart with thirty seconds to learn it, so practical readiness gets serious focus in my studio. Students who've worked with me are out there in real bands and real sessions holding their own, which matters more to me than any exam certificate ever could. If that's the kind of piano player you want to become, I'm genuinely the right fit.

I spent years playing keys on tour before I ever sat down to teach, so my lessons skip a lot of the polite formality and get straight into skills you'd actually use in a band or a session. Chords come first, real ones, because gigging musicians live and die by chord fluency, not by how many classical pieces they've memorized note for note. I teach students to lock in tightly with a rhythm section, using backing tracks and click tracks from lesson one, because playing completely alone never once prepared me for playing with an actual band. Reading charts and lead sheets gets real attention, since that's what actually lands in front of you at a session, not fully notated classical scores. Improvisation isn't optional here, it's core, because I watched too many technically solid players freeze the moment nobody handed them exact notes to play. Technique still matters and gets proper attention, but always tied back to real playing situations, not abstract drills for their own sake. I'm direct about what actually works on a stage or in a studio, because I've been in both plenty of times and learned some lessons the hard way. My goal is simple: get you playing confidently with other musicians, not just alone in a practice room.
