About Richard
Richard is a freelance musician, educator, composer, orchestrator, and music producer based in Los Angeles. He completed a Bachelors of Music in Tuba Performance and Composition from Azusa Pacific University graduating cum laude. He continued his studies further at APU by completing a Masters of Music in Composition with the help of a performance assistantship graduating cum laude.
As a musician, he plays tuba and bass in all styles and loves collaborating with other like–minded musicians in creating new music. This love of music creativity also fuels his compositional interests. Although primarily trained in classical and jazz mediums, Richard enjoys learning about new music and has continued his music studies at LACC learning about Latin and West African music. This life–long learner mindset has enabled Richard to become an effective educator in teaching and growing students to become the best they can be.
As a music producer, Richard has recorded and mixed his personal projects and those of his students and peers. To improve on these skills, he went to LACC to complete a certificate in Music Technology and hopes to learn about cinema sound while growing in his other skills. Richard also maintains a private studio that offers both individual and group lessons.
Thankful for the opportunities and teachings given to him, Richard hopes to give back to his students as generously and aims to equip them with the skills they need to succeed in their creative/academic journey.

I have a thorough background in tuba as I have played professionally for 10 years around Southern California. As such, I know what type of sound music directors, composers, and fellow brass musicians are looking for when they want to hear a tuba. With 18 years of playing experience under my belt, I am familiar with all types of music written for tuba. I am also aware of all the difficulties associated with playing the instrument such as the physically demanding requirements of holding, playing, and breathing on the instrument.
I am an educator by heart, and part of that interest revolves around learning the pedagogical aspects of playing the instrument. I have adopted most of Arnold Jacobs’ pedagogical approach into brass playing while creating my own when teaching students. Illustrations are vital in any type of brass pedagogy, and I make sure to introduce a diverse selection of them in order to have the student visualize the concept better.
As such, I am qualified to teach all brass instruments as I have internalized the foundational concepts needed to create good tone production within the instrument as well as good musicianship from my experience as a professional musician to guide the student towards a better understanding of music.
For tuba, I also go in depth with the physicality of the actual instrument, so if you are either a sousaphone, contra, or tuba player, I can give you tips on how to handle your instrument better so it does not affect your playing.
I can assist you in auditions for honor band, parade band, marching band, drum corps, conservatory and university admission, competitions and festivals.
If you are someone who wishes to get better on tuba or someone who has a desire to learn it for the first time, I would love to help you succeed towards the next step of your musical journey!
