About John
I'm a data scientist, AI consultant, and quantitative financial researcher. You may have seen my videos on YouTube under the name John the Quant, or you may have seen articles on my website. But here's a little more about my experience... I have been a professional data scientist for 5 years and a quant trader for 7. I have a master's degree (MS) in mathematics, with a focus on statistics, but my quant finance, data science, and machine learning skills are mostly self-taught. I know how hard it can be to learn advanced mathematics both in class and on your own. I've been there. I am in a great place to help you. My previous career was in teaching. I worked in education for 8 years; I was a teacher focused on high school math and AP statistics before teaching College Algebra and Business Calculus at the local university. While in college, I worked as a math tutor and I worked as a car salesman and for a couple of years I was a professional singer. I really miss teaching, especially the mentorship aspects, and I'm better at it now than I was back then. I'm excited to be here and excited to help you achieve your goals!

When you understand the reasoning, the math is much easier to grasp. In my teaching, I focus on understanding how the math works rather than remembering formulas. This makes even difficult math, like gradient descent and machine learning, much more accessible. I was able to teach machine learning to community college students who hadn't even finished college algebra yet! All you need is a basic understanding of algebra, willingness to practice, and ambition to learn.
A typical lesson looks like this:
1. Introduction and pleasantries, getting to know you as a person.
2. Answering questions you already have.
3. Casual overview of the day's topic.
4. Interactive discussion of how the topic works and why.
5. Once intuitive understanding exists, we take a look at the math.
6. Explore the math together.
7. You explain the topic to me.
8. Review what we covered.
The most important ability is understanding. If you understand the math, you can never forget it: You can always derive it again, pick it up quickly, and apply it to any problem. That's why I focus so much on understanding, and that is why you should come learn with me!
