About Sharfan
My Academic Practice:
In the past 5 years, I have been privately tutoring in GCSE English, Science & Maths, with English having become my specialty. Separate to teaching those subjects, I have helped in editing and articulating CVs (for students looking for work experience), personal statements (for students applying to university), and emend coursework (for A-Level English Literature students).
My experience and older areas of expertise:
However, predating my more recent academic practices, I have been a professional & commissioned artist on social medias for 5 years, a student councilor and for 7 years, a socio-political commentator since 2017, a mangaka since 2015, and an arts & music scholar for over a decade. From being a legal scribe to performing jazz piano abroad, I have experience in a plethora of fields that have helped me in becoming a well-rounded individual who has gathered the relevant wisdom in guiding students, as well as young adults, in pursuing their passions and success.
An insight into my personal life:
I have been practicing swimming and martial arts since I was young, painting for almost 15 years, have had artworks exhibited at the Art Pavillion, started earning pocket money at the age of 14 by selling ink illustrations, and have presented a legal case at an internship with Oxford Scholastica.
Having been raised in the most traditional Asian household, I have had to bare the brunt of life from early on but this has allowed me to realise my own shortcomings from a young age and what I needed to do to succeed. Such an upbringing has instilled discipline and deeper contemplation of life in me, which would naturally have happened in a much later stage in my life. Because of this, I have been able to take the necessary steps in achieving the best I can and gather wisdom that I can pass on to the youth. As a result, I have also been striving to make sure that parents can develop a healthy and mutually-beneficial relationship with the children.

An insight into the main contents of my classes:
My first few classes are approximately 2 hours long (with a 10 minute break to let students rest) and primarily focus on the basics of creative writing: learning to describe any given photos with great detail, engaging the 5 senses, constructing a strong and compelling narrative, using ambitious vocabulary that goes beyond the confines of what is taught at school, and refining an efficient use of punctuation & structure.
Later classes will involve what the school of the student is teaching and helping them to develop on specific areas that they are struggling on. Such 'areas' can span from basic grammar & punctuation for kids sitting SATs to analysing quotes & writing essays about 'Macbeth' for teenagers sitting GCSEs soon. Furthermore, along with lessons, I may provide customised resources that are tailored to the needs of the student so that learning is made easier and more constructive.
For exam-going years (particularly GCSEs), classes will always emphasise an element of exam practice to ensure that they are attuned to the pressure and can manage to write under timed conditions.
Additional content for special classes:
Special classes are available for students that require help with making CVs, editing essays and writing speeches/ presentations for any English language speaking examinations (the English speaking component is for Year 10-11 GCSE students only). Note: editing essays also applies to A-level English Literature coursework.
A short biography about my life:
Having been an arts & music scholar for more than a decade, a student councilor for 7 years, a socio-political commentator for 7 years, and a professional social media artist for 5 years, I have experience across a variety of fields other than English and aim to be well-rounded in an increasingly competitive world. I have spent time in recent years to independently analyse classic plays like Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' or 'Hamlet' to slightly more contemporary texts like Shelley's 'Frankenstein' in order to cultivate the perceptive and deeper ideas that are woven into the fabric of the books and subsequently provide students, who are covering such books, the grade 8-9 (A-A*) ideas for essay writing.
One can never truly master English; we only stand at the shallow shores of what is a boundless ocean with no end in sight and, only when trying to conquer it, can you appreciate the vastness of the knowledge outside your grasp. However, like the great empires and conquests of past and present, a challenge of that magnitude only spurs an academic to venture further.
Who are my classes targeted to:
My classes comprise of students who attend primary (10-11 years old) to young and late teens (13-16 years old) who are preparing for exams or wish to get ahead of their classes.
The long-term goal:
My English classes primarily aim to prepare young students with an arsenal of vocabulary, critical thinking skills and knowledge to confidently approach difficult exams and continue to utilise their linguistic skills beyond their academic years. In addition to covering their school's content and teaching them to write compellingly, I help in managing stress as well as plan routines to provide students with a healthy work-and-fun life balance so that they enjoy their youth!
