About Fred
I'm Fred, and I've spent a long time now with a violin tucked under my chin. It's a strange and lovely place to make music from, when you think about it — the instrument rests right against you, close to your ear, so you hear it more intimately than anyone else in the room ever will. There's something quietly personal about that. People often call the violin the instrument closest to the human voice, and the longer I've played, the more I've felt the truth of it: at its best, it doesn't just play notes, it seems to speak.
I won't pretend the violin is the easiest place to begin — it's honest in a way some instruments aren't, and in the early days it tends to tell on you a little. But I've come to love that honesty, because it makes the slow blossoming of a real, singing tone all the more rewarding when it arrives. And it arrives for far more people than believe it will. I think of music not as a skill you conquer and then set down, but as a companion you keep for the whole of your life, and the violin has been exactly that for me — still surprising me, still teaching me things, even now.
So I teach the way I'd have wanted to be taught: patiently, without judgment, and at a pace that feels good rather than one that leaves you discouraged. I've sat with plenty of nervous beginners — people sure they'd started too late, or that the instrument was simply beyond them — and that fear almost never holds up once they're given a little time and a lot of encouragement. The ones who give up usually weren't short on ability; they were just rushed, or made to feel clumsy, or asked for beauty before they'd been allowed to find their footing. I'd rather make very sure none of that happens to you.
Whatever's drawn you to the violin — a lifelong longing to play it, a love of the sound, or simple curiosity about where it might lead — I'd be glad to walk part of that road alongside you.

I like to begin by understanding what you're actually after, because the right path looks completely different from one person to the next. Are you dreaming of playing particular pieces one day? Picking up the violin purely for your own enjoyment? Curious where it might take you, with no fixed destination in mind? There are no wrong answers — I just want to know where you're headed so the work we do leads somewhere you genuinely want to go.
From there we build slowly and carefully, because with the violin the early foundations matter enormously. We'll take real, unhurried time over the things that make everything else possible: a relaxed, comfortable hold that doesn't fight the instrument, a bow arm that moves freely, dependable tuning of the ear and the fingers, and the beginnings of a clean, warm tone. None of that is busywork — every bit of it is what eventually lets you play with ease and expression instead of tension. And we'll get there musically, not mechanically, so it never drifts away from the reason you picked the instrument up.
I try to be honest and gentle in equal measure. When something needs work, I'll tell you plainly — but kindly, and always with a clear, doable thing to focus on next rather than a vague "just keep practicing." Real progress on the violin isn't about huge bursts of effort anyway; it's about small, regular, encouraging steps that quietly add up, and a good deal of patience with the sounds you make along the way. Part of my role is to guide those steps, and part of it is simply keeping you feeling capable and motivated enough to keep taking them.
But mostly I want you to enjoy yourself, and I don't think that's a soft or secondary thing. The people who stay with an instrument for life are almost always the ones who found it genuinely rewarding along the way — and the violin, for all its early demands, has a way of repaying patience beautifully. So we'll keep the mood relaxed, celebrate each small victory as your tone and confidence grow, and move at a pace that lets you actually savor the journey. Wherever you're starting, and however far you decide to take it, I'd love to help you build a relationship with the violin that lasts.
