About Joel
As a former university mathematics professor, I've dedicated my career to transforming students' understanding and confidence through proven teaching methods that consistently deliver dramatic grade improvements and exam success. My approach goes beyond simply getting the right answer—I systematically identify foundational gaps, build deep conceptual mastery, and teach explicit problem-solving strategies that students carry with them long after our sessions end. Drawing on years of university-level teaching experience, I know exactly what professors expect, how exams are constructed, and which concepts students struggle with most, allowing me to target our work where it matters most. I work with undergraduate STEM majors, mathematics students transitioning to proof-based courses, pre-health students navigating quantitative requirements, and advanced high school students preparing for university-level work. My students don't just improve their grades—they develop genuine mathematical confidence and independence, transforming from anxious and struggling to capable and self-assured.

My Tutoring Approach
My Teaching Method and Techniques
I focus on building deep conceptual understanding rather than memorizing formulas. Through Socratic questioning, I guide students to discover solutions themselves, which builds genuine problem-solving skills and confidence. I trace back to find foundational gaps—sometimes a calculus struggle actually stems from shaky algebra—and systematically fill those holes. I teach students to recognize problem patterns and archetypal structures, so they're not memorizing hundreds of different problems but understanding a few dozen core concepts. Most importantly, I explicitly teach how to approach unfamiliar problems, turning struggle from a source of anxiety into a productive learning tool.
A Typical Lesson Plan
We start by reviewing homework together, where I have you explain your thinking process to reveal not just computational errors but conceptual misunderstandings. I then target one or two foundational concepts to strengthen using multiple representations—graphs, definitions, real-world analogies, and counterexamples. We work through problems together with you doing most of the talking while I guide you with strategic questions. You practice independently while I observe and coach your problem-solving process in real-time, intervening when I see unproductive habits forming. We close with strategic homework assignments that target our session's concepts—I'd rather you complete five problems with full understanding than struggle through twenty in confusion.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor?
I teach problem-solving as an explicit skill, showing you what to try when stuck and how to learn from mistakes, not just covering content. My university teaching experience means I know exactly what professors expect and how exams are constructed, so I can prepare you for the specific challenges you'll face. I address mathematical anxiety directly, helping you develop resilience and a growth mindset by reframing errors as information rather than failure. I connect abstract concepts to visual representations and intuitive understanding, showing you that mathematics makes sense rather than presenting arbitrary rules. My ultimate goal is to make myself unnecessary—I teach you how to learn mathematics independently, not just how to solve this week's problems.
Who My Lessons Are For?
I work primarily with undergraduate STEM majors struggling with core sequences like Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, or introductory Real Analysis. I'm excellent for mathematics majors facing the transition to proof-based courses who need to develop mathematical maturity and abstract thinking skills. Pre-med and pre-health students who need to pass quantitative prerequisites efficiently, and graduate students in non-mathematical fields handling quantitative methods courses, both benefit from my approach. I also work with advanced high school students in AP Calculus or AP Statistics who want to build strong foundations before college. My approach works best for motivated students who've struggled despite effort—they're ready to engage deeply with understanding rather than seeking quick homework fixes.
