About Alyssa
I recently graduated from Dartmouth College with my degree in psychology and education, and I have 4+ years of teaching experience ranging from toddlers to adult learners. I fell in love with teaching while doing environmental education at a local campground and have since taught a wide range of ages and subjects, including preschool basic math and literacy, K-6 English and math, and middle and high school environmental studies. I am well-versed in basic literacy and phonics skills and basic mathematics skills (up to 2nd grade), but I also have a ton of experience in writing and editing high school and college-level essays of all sorts (persuasive, personal, creative). I received 5s on both the AP English Literature & Composition and AP English Language & Composition exams, as well as a 780 on the English SAT portion. I consider my biggest strength to be my ability to connect with students and engage them in material they may not otherwise find interesting.

As a tutor, I feel the most important thing in helping children learn is connecting with them to help them connect with the material. By finding common ground and uncovering students' interests, I find my students have much more success both in academics and in their personal lives. My tutoring is aimed at any age of students looking for help with reading and/or writing skills. I am particularly skilled at persuasive essay writing and editing essays for all subjects, and also well-versed in phonics and literacy skills for young learners. My typical lessons focus on what the individual student needs, drawing on their strengths to help them overcome their weaknesses. For instance, if a student needed help writing an essay, I would engage them with the prompt and help them develop an idea that would actually interest them. Then, we could work together to find evidence and support for their own idea. I would then edit their work to create a completed final project.
